My girlfriend calls me this morning:

"My Jeep won't start"

My obvious questions (Did you leave the lights on last night? Are you putting the key in the ignition? Are you sure its your jeep?) were all slapped down.

Then she said the gauge cluster is saying "NO BUS" where the digital odometer usually reads.

I'm just now getting home to take care of this and try and do some research. I see a lot of stuff after Googling, many things with many people saying their are many fixes (from removing the gauge cluster and cleaning the contacts, to complete replacements of electronic components).

I was curious if any of you folks have run into this issue in the passed and if you know what worked out for you.

She called a dealership and, of course, they promptly told her there is "no doubt" that it is her gauge cluster that needs total replacement, a hefty 1600 dollar piece.

Please give me some good advise so she doesn't A) think I'm a moron and B) throw 2 grand down at the dealership if she need not.

Thanks

-Pat

If its a Cherokee,I would tell the dealer that gave her that figure to rethink his answer.Cluster is around $250 dealer cost.Takes about a half hour to change.

Pat, the pcm and body computer, and instrument panel is not comm. with each other, unplug the inst. panel amd then see if it will start, could be that , pcm or bcm,or crank sensor or cam sensor, unplug each one at a time and see if the no buss goes away

I was fortunate enough to find some information on checking the crankshaft position sensor to make sure it wasn't shot. Turns out I had some pretty low resistance where there should have been none.

Found a parts house around the corner that had one in stock ($107) and had it swapped out in an hour. Worst part of the whole operation was trying to reach it way up on the bellhousing from under the truck.

Thanks for your help, felluhs.
