Over the winter I took my brother's 440 from a stock bottom end 440 that had stock Edelbrock heads and a custom solid flat tappet cam, and went through it for some major upgrades.
I'm going to post up some before and after results here to highlight some of what we did.

The original combination included a Holley Street Dominator intake, and a Proform 950 carburetor that we had gone through. A Firecore distributor was added to provide spark from the Accel Digital ignition.
Running through a 727 with a Turbo Action10" convertor, 4.10 gears and Coltrane, the 3800 pound Satellite ran a best of 12.11 @ Norwalk last fall.

Hmmmm, cant get any pictures to load right now. Guess I'll come back to this later,......

Before tearing the old engine down, we made a few pulls on the Superflow to get a baseline for the upgrades.

Was the bottom end of this motor tired or just have real low compression pistons? Seems like it should have run better than a 12.11.

When the Edelbrock heads went on, the decision was made to put too big of a header on. Scott bought 2" Super Comps planning for the future. We knew they would hurt the torque curve.
The convertor stalled to 3800 in his car.

I felt the 3800 lb. car should have run 11.80's if the hole in the torque curve wasn't there.
Actually the car was pretty low compression but it impressed a lot of people for a completely stock bottom end.

The engine made a tick over 500 horsepower and 540 lbs-ft torque on the as raced tune.
After tearing into it, I found a couple of scored cylinders, and a couple of rod bearings on their way south.

The new build was planned , parts ordered, etc. Scott asked me if I could get 650 horsepower on pump gas for him. I probably laughed at that . I told him I could port his heads and build a nice short block, New cam to go with it, better intake, etc. And get a little over 600 on pump gas.

I have been using Race Tec pistons and ordered a set with a small dome. I didn't want to cut the heads a ton to get decent compression.

The block was decked square, bored and diamond honed .020, New cam bearings, etc.
A fresh factory forged crankshaft was scrounged up due to the old one being a welded on remanufactured piece of questionable quality.
I assembled the shortblock with fairly tight bearing clearances, wanting to use a modern thinner oil .
Rings were file fit , 1/16, 1/16, 3/16 with moly tops and a Napier cut scraper second and installed on Eagle H beam rods

Actually both... The compression before was 8.9 to 1. When I originally overhauled this motor (about 14 years ago) it was built with used parts from several different motors... It was the preverbial 509 cam motor until 3 yrs ago when we put the RPM heads and solid cam in it.

I ported his Edelbrock RPM heads and worked on getting them to flow well without having a large csa.

The final assembly,
I picked an old Ultradyne NF69 grind for it along with Crane gold 1.6 rockers. Final compression after minor chamber clean up to the heads is 11.2 to one. With the large cam and aluminum heads it will run on e10 93 octane easily.

You can see on the graph above, where his old engine peaked, we now have over 100 more horsepower. And it's still climbing. The peak horsepower was 649.4. So no, I didn't get what he wanted out of. I could have done the hot oil/ cool coolant deal and easily went past 650, but I ran it like it would be in the car at 170 degree water temp.
These pulls were with the Driven brand 10/30 break in oil, and now I have him on Driven 5/20 conventional so I'm sure thats a gain also.
First day at the track along with a new 8" convertor he ran a string of low 10.60's with a best mph of 127.2
60' times were really soft, 1.55 range driving it like his old combination. The mph should be good for 10.40 something I figure.

It was over 3800 with him. With the taller intake, he went to a glass hood with a scoop on it and lost a little weight. That and a couple other things had him at 3610 at Martin.
When I gave him the engine I had the timing at 34 total and it made more power at 36. If we get it to 60' we have a little room to play with it yet.

Keith, you are a stud.. But those yellow wires hurt my eyes. Do you still have it on the pump? I'll send you some wires.. Will the 135 degree boots work on all spark plugs? Are those his headers? Thanks

Thanks for posting this Keith.
This motor is not dissimilar to my motor, except i have over 12.5.1 comp and the .590 with iron 1.5 rockers. what sort of gains do you think you got from porting the intake ?

Great information and thank you for sharing it with us.

What did you do to button the bottom end up?
Can't believe a camshaft that large and it still only peaks before 6500.

I was thinking that should have been a mid 11 sec combo...but like you said w/ an older low compression shortblock and a tight converter, it still ran good.
Really nice gains w/ the new combo!

LOL...HP would have surpassed 650 with some REAL plug wires! Just love the spark plug boots...cute.

NICE build and awesome power with garden variety parts in the right hands!

Even with moderate porting, those are still pretty small heads to feed that many cubes at higher rpm.

First day at the track along with a new 8" convertor he ran a string of low 10.60's with a best mph of 127.2
60' times were really soft, 1.55 range driving it like his old combination. The mph should be good for 10.40 something I figure.

Any idea what the track elevation is, or what the air was like at that time?

I cant find the exact track elevation, but it should be around 700 ft. The air was decent, mid 70's low humidity, but the barometric pressure was mediocre.
Sorry I done have exact information. I had tires blow out on my dually and ended up with my open trailer and small truck. All my tools and equipment was left in my enclosed trailer.

You gave enough for me to get an idea of the conditions at the time. That thing runs good, other than the 60 foot.

I took the car to a local track on TNT night to work on the sixty foot. I was loading the converter at 2000 rpm the first time out. I tried loading it at 2500 and that made all the difference in the world.... Now the converter hits so hard we are working on trying to get it to hook again... I think we may have it figured out now, I'll find out at Kil Kare next weekend!!
