I've noticed my steering wheel is 15-20* left of center when driving straight down the road. The truck pulls very slightly right when going down a straight section of road. I'm not sure it's not the crown of the road pulling the truck right, it's minor. Should I be looking for something bent on the left side? I recently replaced the front axle U-joints, but I don't see how this would be involved?

Check for a worn track bar and other steering components.

if you get a chance to get on the road when it's empty, cross over the centerline, and see if the pull is in the opposite direction. i find some roads really do pull me towards the shoulder in the truck, but not in the car.

A friend of mine bought either a '99 or 2000 (can't remember) Ram "Off Road" truck brand new. It had the same symptoms (slight pull to the right), and he had back to the dealer several times. The tech's drove it and agreed that it had the right pull, but couldn't resolve it after probably 5 trips back. Eventually, he learned to ignore it. I bought my 2001 Ram 4X4 used in 2005...it has the same right pull. Soon after I bought it I put new tires on it and had them check the alignment. They said it was good, and that set of tires wore perfectly. I don't know... If you figure it out, please post the cure.

usually not a lot you can change on a straight axle front end, especially camber unless you go with offset ball joints. Caster and toe are the only adjustments available without extensive time involved. That said .25+ toe will provide a better driving experience on older ram trucks at the sacrifice of a little tire wear. Another thing to "try" is to swap the tires side/side and see if the pull changes. Might be a tire issue. Think my 2500 4x4 has a slight drift to the left iirc.... can't remember for sure, it's a truck and wears the tires great so it doesn't concern me.

...If you want the wheel straight loosen the adjuster sleave on the steering link from the pitman arm to the tie rod assy. Give it some twists with a channel lock and you can move the wheel. It won't affect toe setting.

Crawled back under for a look at the track bar. Nothing screaming worn out, but driver side axle seal is now leaking, guess I buggered it pulling or installing the axle for the U-joints. Going back in, Uggh. I'm not so concerned about the slight drift to the right. More concerned about the wheel being crooked left, and what caused that. Truck has 71k on original factory non-greaseable fittings. Maybe time to get a bunch of Moog parts with zirk fittings everywhere, get an alignment and be done with it for 10 years.

If all steering and suspension components are tight, then go have an alignment done, that will cure it,thing move slightly over years, needs to be adjusted. as the leaking axle seal go, not an easy back yard job, the left seal is next to the differential,( yes the ring gear, carrier assy needs to be removed), special tool to reach through the axle tube ( can make one with washers and LONG threaded rod, nuts) the right one is next to the axle actuator mid tube. again special tool.

Okay, I understand. Front axle U-joints were done on jack stands in my gravel driveway, and that tested my patience big time. Sounds like the seal replacements are going to be a trip to the shop. You are also correct, if an alignment alone will fix things, I can push the replacement track bar, tie rod ends and ball joints down the road a year or two.

My 01 Off Road has the same pull to the right, nothing big, just annoying.

the drivers side axle seal also was leaking for the first few months after I did the seals, I left the gear lube level a half inch below the plug and it seems to have stopped leaking, even after topping off to the plug level...

I thought about leaving the fluid level lower, leaking seal not a big deal unless the axle went under water. But then I thought maybe the carrier bearings were meant to be partially submerged, and might get hot with less oil. I also am thinking about adding some Lucas to try and swell the seals, but that may just be a waste.

Odds are your axle seals are fine. It just puked out into the tube when you pulled the axles. I had the same issue with my 2000 Ram 2500 after a full front end rebuild. My steering was all over the place. Cause was mainly the steering box and track bar.

That is a good point about spillover into the tube. I'll have to watch it for a bit and see if it continues or stops. Thanks for the heads up!

DART67GT is on it. Likely just some spilled out. Seals are pretty tough when axles are put back in.
