Just wondering what the right fluid for a 904 and 727 would be. Ive been told so many things lately about which fluid to use.

If your mixing with original Fluid, it would be dexron type transmission fluid.

Transmission has no fluid in it nor does converter.

Type F with 1 qt of 30w non-detergent motor oil.

I was told that non detergent oil has less issues with foaming. I'm not a chemist, so I'm just going on told by a guy that heard from a guy that knew a guy... Besides, if it's good enough for a Briggs and Stratton...

We started using Type F in stock trans' because it gave a firmer shift feel after fluid changes than Dextron did, and it carried over into our performance builds. We started using a qt of 30w in them to improve lubrication - non detergent for (perceived) less foaming. I've used shift kits for A500's that suggested adding the motor oil. Use what you wish - this is what I use and why. As I said, I'm not a chemist. As to the "Briggs" comment, it was to amuse, not confuse. It was free and worth every penny. Maybe 2

I am not trying to start a feud. I was just wondering the reasoning for the non detergent. I use Type F for the non foaming reason along with seemingly firmer shifting. 3 seasons ago I replaced the transmission in the drag car that a friend of mine and I built in 1992 for the car. It still worked flawlessly but I had another sitting on the garage floor that I had rebuilt for replacement so decided to put it in along with a different converter. The transmission that I took out had the fluid changed a couple of times in the interval with countless passes on it. There was vertually no crap in the pan. Note these rebuilds were both done using over the counter OEM type 727 kits and using Type F fluid. IMO use what works for you.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

We have several 904's that we push 600+ hp through, and the extra lube can't hurt. Some of them are running drilled driving shells that throw a lot of fluid around, so we use the n/d oil. Stock planetaries put a lot of load on the bushings, and it doesn't seem to be cost effective to roller bearing the trans when there is little performance gain and the oil seems to do the trick. to ya!
