Recently, I have noticed having check the oil light ON when idle on stop light at the end of 100 mile round trip with my 69 Polara 383cui. It was first bigger trip after winter storage. Engine properly warmed up and the light turned off as soon as I started moving. If RPM were slightly higher then idle, the warning light went off. Before the trip, the oil were changed, using the same type 15W40, including oil filter. Oil level is correct. I recall to see the check the oil warning light only before cranking the the engine and then turned off, ever since I had a car. I did measurement with the mechanical gauge and the result is not so good. Cold engine, 15psi, bit later it dropped in the range of less then 7psi. Half throttle - 40PSI. I don't have a RPM gauge to verify throttle position, so I just guess but definitely not full throttle. Check short video below http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1pC_O6-aPwThe problem might be caused by simple oil pump getting week, or more probably the cam bearings are worn :-/ to solve temporarily the issue I´m considering to replace the oil pump for high volume type plus new hardened driveshaft. Do you have any advice on recommended kit or parts alone? Thank you for help

Try switching to 30wt oil. I tried the HV pump route. All I succeded to do was to suck the pan dry on hard runs.
I am truckless..

A new pump alone might do it, I would not be afraid to run the high volume though if you don't rev the engine high. Melling makes a good pump.
Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat Hear my motor screamin while I'm tearin up the street

If that weight of oil was OK before. first try another filter. then shim the spring a bit. As said you might need a slightly heavier grade

Sounds to me that the engine is wore out. I know that's not what you wanted to hear.
Even if you succeed in getting the light to stay off at idle, by changing the oil or the oil pump. That don't change the fact that the bearings are wore out and you can still spin a bearing with good oil pressure. If that happens then you more than likely will damage the block and crank and rods.
It's kind of like you can pay me now, or pay more later. IMO
Take the money you were gonna spend on a pump and put it toward a rebuild.

It probally has worn bearing. But its not a daily driver. My 83 Ram Charger would run about 4 PSI idle hot and maybe 40 running down the road.I put 100K on it with no problems. My 440 that I had done had one rod bent and I mean bent.It still ran to 6500 on a regular basis.A HV pump wont do much for pressure. It just pushes more oil.A High pressure pump will increase pressure. The old GM had low OP problems. They actually sold a factory kit to put larger rotors etc in the pump.I did a bunch back in the 80s.I run HV HP pumps on my stuff.Never sucked a pan dry unless you run at high RPMs for quite a while.Rocky

IMO, this is the perfect situation for a HV pump.

And likely not the pump or cam bearings fault.

with this too.
And Finally, if this is an occasional driver and not hard on the throttle all of the time. Probably last another 15 years without doing anything.

If you look at the OEM specs for oil pressure you might just find that you are within spec.
As for sucking the pan dry, right. If a HV pump sucks your pan dry your problem isn't the pump.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

The HV pump rotors are 1/4" thicker than the standard pump.
