Finally got the engine in, hooked up and ready to fire.
Having some trouble getting it to run. Turns over fine and acts like it wants to start, even did fire off but only for a second.
I think I have a couple of issues to deal with. One being the Holley Street Avenger 870 carb. I bought it used and have no idea if the settings have been messed with.
Second is the MSD6AL ignition system. At first it didn't want to work but after rechecking the wiring, removing some connectors and soldering the wires it began to give good spark.
I have played with the timing hoping to hit the sweet spot but so far no success.
Getting frustrated and tired so I thought I would post a plea for help.

Is the timing locked out or have advance.. put the
damper on 20* before zero if advance or 32* if locked
on the compression stroke... then put the rotor at the leading
edge of the #1 post in the dist(make sure your on
the compression stroke) and if needed pull the valve
cover to confirm

Thanks,
I was able to get it to start for a bit but then I saw the carb putting out a fountain of gasoline.
Checked the float levels and they are fine but this looked like a 1/2" diameter stream of gasoline rising an inch above the carb.
Never saw anything like that before. Definitely flooding the motor.

Did you pull out all the plugs and roll the motor over after it flooded over?

Yes.
I also took the front bowl off the carb and found that the float tab was bent enough that the needle valve wasn't closing completely.
Each time I had checked the fuel level was after a belch of gasoline had come out the vent stack.
Once I readjusted the float and valve it fired right up and began to idle.
I could only run it for a couple of minutes though because my alternator seized up and was burning the fan belt to shreds.
I'll get that replaced, rebuild the carb and put the recommend jets in for my altitude while I'm at it.
The motor sounded really good and should run strong once I get all these issues straightened out.

If that is a new motor or a new cam and lifters, non roller, make sure and run it high enough and long enough to break in the cam and lifters

My plan was to run at 2000 rpms for 20 minutes but when the alternator set up I lost my cooling and didn't want it to over heat.

Smell the oil on the dip stick also.. just to make
sure you didnt dump a bunch of fuel into it.. change
it if needed
