Was the Fuel pump installed prior to painting a typical 440? I seem to recall back in the day see original Fuel pump with a lot of engine paint on them. Most restored cars I see now are unpainted. any thoughts?

Yes, 440's were bolted to the engine prior to it being painted. If you have a vapor separator on your car, the bolt that holds the vapor separator to the fuel pump should not have engine colored paint on it. The bolt would have been replaced when they installed the vapor separator.

Big blocks,383/440, yes, pump was painted on the engine. 318/340/360 and Hemi, no, they were added after paint.

hmmm - are you sure about that. I'm pretty sure my original 70 440 had orange paint on both bolts. Besides, why would the factory throw away a bolt that doesn't show anyway ??

The example you posted has it not painted

That looks like the Frank Badalson motor on display at Carlisle. I can't tell if the VS bolt has paint on it or not.

I seem to remember an article in Mopar Collectors Guide (maybe I'm wrong) but it was an article that Frank Badalson did and it had a picture of the bolt with the vapor separator.

Just picked up a a12 road runner original owner car . Replaced the fuel separator and for sure both bolts are painted. The engine was never painted after it left the factory. They would have never replaced the bolt, because it had paint on it.

By that thinking for cars with power steering it would have had an engine paint colored bolt at the one pivot but I am pretty sure they had a zinc phosphate plated bolt.
