The M1 is a tall intake.Do you have a drop base for the air cleaner. That should at least solve the hitting problem and might add more hood clearance.Rocky

I also had this issue with my '88 GF with M1 dual plane intake. It was a tight fit with factory air cleaner but I had 1/2 inch and added 1/2 wood spacer to solve problem. I was going to try grinding a little on the side of the intake, but hated the thought of risking that.
Facts are stubborn things.

Had the same issue using an M-1 on the 340 in the Dart. Summit sells different sized rings that fit on the bottom of the air cleaner housing. IIRC they have a pretty large selection with different height's. When we ran them on dirt cars they were called "Sure Seals" and utilized a rubber O-ring to seal at the carb flange. I also had to put one on the 383 in the 70 Satellite to get enough clearance for the throttle linkage on the aftermarket Eddy air cleaner. This is what I used: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/aaf-all26085/overview/
