Hey guys,

My buddy is going to select his converter for the stroker AMC and needs some advice from you off roasters/4 wheelers who mainly drive on the street but use their trucks/jeeps off road on the week-ends

Here's the thread in the 442" torque monster:

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=0#Post8131633

My own view is the torque (by design) is so broad and flat I would tend to keep the converter stall fairly tight (like 3200 and then try to get it to flash around 4000-4200. This way the jeep will cruise and drive "tight" and when he nails it in high gear the vert will flash right to the sweet spot.

The jeep will probably weigh 3300 w/d 3.73 gears, 33" tires and an optimum cruise speed of around 2700. I also realize that a Jeeps poor aero even at highway speeds will effectively add drag/weight to what the converter "sees" so to me that's all the more reason the cruise part throttle need to be fairly tight.

My thoughts are with such good power to weight and broad torque this motor isn't really going to care much how tight the converter stalls. I liken it to my 2600 pound 427 small block Cobra with a 5 speed, it really doesn't care what gear I'm in it'll pull right out of the basement with just the slightest tap of the throttle. To me there's not much sense putting too much stall/flash into the jeep, not with all that torque.

It's a built TH400 and a 9 1/2" converter.

Thoughts? I'm not really an off roader, but I know a little about building torque monsters

I am a wheeling newbie, but I will share my experience. My Jeep's 318 stroker puts out about 370 HP and 410 ft. lb. of torque, and after giving all of the specs and the application (street/off-road), PTC recommended a 9-1/2" converter that stalls at 2,600 rpm. My Jeep has 37" tires and 4.56 gears. My thinking is, for wheeling, its better to err on the side of a tighter converter, rather than looser.

It depends what you are doing off road.

Converter slip at low RPMs is going to produce more heat than you can handle...

I ran a McCandless/Hughes 360 in my Scrambler, and kept the stall in the low to mid 2k area.
