I went to change the cap & rotor for PM and noticed over a 1/4 inch of vertical movement in the shaft, would this cause a miss at WOT??

Most have slop in them.. as to a 1/4" that is a bit
much... time for a collar on the shaft to keep the
timing tight(as the intermediate shaft moves up and
down the timing changes)

Think that might be causing a high rpm miss
Will still be a few weeks before I can do any testing

I don't know about the firecore dist, thats a chinese piece, don't know if MSD are made here still or not. they may be chinese now also? and a high speed miss can be caused by any number of things from fuel to electrical noise issues to a bad part or plug/wires,valve spring etc

If the timing is jumping around then yes it could cause
a miss... with a 1/4" of vertical movement the intermediate
shaft would be turning a FAIR amount and it would be
hard to say what the timing is at any given point..
yeah it might be time to get a new dist unless you
feel like rebuilding that one... but if you dont use
the tach drive why bother(and I dont see a cable hooked
up to it)

Have not used the tach MANY years
Time to replace and I think Rich has a great product
It might just be a lean pop,but until I get this rotater cuff back in shape,I can't even get in & out of the car

Go with the tall mechanical unit and a fresh set of wires and never look back.
The Firecore50 has rock solid reliability and a good advance curve built in from the factory and all you really need to fine tune is the amount of advance you're engine wants.

I have the same cable drive dist. verify the pick-up gap, too large of a gap will cause trouble also.

Pull the distributer and remove the pin and collar at the bottom.Sometimes the collar is not drilled in the middle and can be reveresed to eliminate the extra clearence or just add shims between the collar and housing.
