I'm hooking up a pro comp 5" tach. I need to get power to the tach lighting and also power the tach itself. I want to tie the tach lighting into the rest of the dash lighting so the tach will be illuminated along with the rest of the dash. So I don't just want a switched 12V source not tied into the dash lights. Any ideas?

If you look at the dash harness, there should be some wire molds that have 3 female sockets. Some are power, some are ground. If there is a free spot, a "bullet" connector available at the auto parts store should fit (there are different sizes)
This should eliminate tapping into the harness. I believe this is how the factory powered the various options (like light group)
A copy of the wiring diagrams should be available here:

hope this helps

Just hook it to the dash light fuse, it'll work with the headlight switch .

Usually the light system wires under the dash are orange. Just tap into one.

What kind of car?

On my Challenger there is a three bullet female connector that is orange in color that is rarely used. I just stuck a bullet in that one and I was good to go. There are sometimes more than one but mine was to the right of the instrument cluster under the dash. They are used for optional stuff like Ashtray lights etc.

70 Challenger SE. Thanks for the posts. Those schematics are cool.
I have all kinds of options available for hooking this up. Thanks again for the help.

There will be a couple of Orange 3-way molds in the dash wiring....one should be around the ash tray area with two wires in it already.
I don't think they dim with the dash rheostat...they supply a constant power when the headlite switch is turned on to either park or head lite positions.

and they do dim, at least on my car. I run all my aftermarket guage lights off it and they work exactly as the factory guage lights.

I have found the orange 3-plug to dim with the dimmer

and a blue wire with a red 3-plug and it was 12volt with the key and did not dim
