That really looks like a piece of metal shaving or a piece of sand grit got into your oil supply. Something too big to pass thru and the grit ate the bearing up and pulled on it enough to re shape the bearing. Seen it before. Clean everything thoroughly and put new bearings n it.

. once off it became apparent they were no longer the same shape as the others. they where a tighter radius as well as being toast. they're the same part # as the others but they physically look like they were for a smaller journal. what would cause this?
heat from the lack of oil/clearance
EXACTLY........did you check the bearing clearances on EVERY rod and EVERY throw, or just put them in. You were VERY few runs from a spun bearing and a wiped crank journal. Be sure and have those rods checked for roundness, size and proper crush, as well as checking the crank for size and taper

ANY engine, that is of a performance intent.....if I didn't assemble it myself, or know the builder VERY well, I consider that engine used and I knock it down to have a look. And I have seen some well known BUILDERS who may mic the crank and rods, but pull ONE PAIR of bearings from a set to check clearance and then just assemble the rest. Anything could happen, from a thin or thick shell, to packaged wrong, or stamped wrong. CHECK THEM ALL. Sure, it takes time, but less time than redoing a motor because of a spun bearing

Its heat causing that... I had low oil pressure in a Jeep I bought so I dropped the pan and seen 1 set of rod bearings that fell out ... I replaced them with a stock set of bearings and changed the oil pump... I believe the previous owner ran low on oil or over heated the engine

A saying I learned long ago. If you didn't have enough time to check the first time, you'll certainly have enough time the second time. Its always quicker to do it once. Doug
