If you have a motor that makes peak torque at 5600 and peak hp at 7400 where would you want the stall spend of the convertor?

If you are talking about a drag racing application, 1000 below your shift point would work.

I know where there is a converter sitting on the shelf that I would love to see you try.

There is more to life then "stall speed" and "slip"...

Call someone that has a clue and have one built for your combo...
(I use PTC, but Lenny at Ultimate seems to be a crowd favorite around here too).

I have had four different stator's/pumps behind my motor that had the same stall speed (or close), but all ran VERY different.

Just as an example...

I shift my motor at 5800. The tight converter that is in there now flashes to about 4800 or so on 11psi (and that's about what it drops to on the shift). When I had the first converter in there, it would stall to 5400 (shifting at 5800) so it was on the converter the ENTIRE run.

That being said, the loose converter was about .2 faster then the tight converter that's in there now, and that was with 26% slip on the big end!

So like I said... what the converter is doing in the middle of the track is just as (if not more) important then the stall/slip numbers.

This is for a 904 trans and 95% race car. I think you would shift it at 7800-8000 so you think it would want a 6800 convertor. Lenny will be getting the call just want some opinions and see what every one else is doing. Its for a friends car and we were talking about it yesterday. Brian what is your stall in your glide?

Lenny got my business and is in the process of building me another one right now. In the past with this motor, I had runabout 5600 stall against a torque peak of 5300, and 7,000 hp peak. I then tried it looser and wound up way loose, at about 6500. The car actually picked up, but so did the rpm at the stripe. Loose on the bottom means slip increase up top too. With the extra gear ratio of a Torqueflite a loose converter really helps consistency if you are on the edge to start with. It lowers the initial hit, and spreads the torque multiplication a bit more than a tighter converter. Plus if you spin a touch, a loose converter starts to lock up and actually pulls a touch harder rather than one close to the torque peak, which is already pulling as hard as it can. I was told the new converter ought to have 5 to 6 percent slip, which is based on my gear ratios, car weight. I asked for the new one to be set up for best performance, which I think allows it to be as tight as it can be for my application.
