My pickup tube cracked right after the boss, and so now the threaded section is left up in the boss, the tube broke when it was taken out.

So how do I get in there and remove that?

Look for a left handed easy out or drill bit large enough to bite the internal diameter and turn it out.

Was this in your Hemi? I had the same problem with the stock Mopar 6 qt. pan, 1/2" pu in my Hemi. Luckily I was just cruising in the neighborhood when I noticed erratic oil pressure. I got it home before it broke off completely. I used an easy-out with no problems and replaced the PU with another MP. unit. so far, so good.

You might see if you can jamb a cheap HF NPT tap up there & get it to bite CCW into the piece

Oil pickup tube cracked two threads below the boss! Woohoo! Not nearly as bad as it could have been!

It sounds like an EZ-Out type extractor is what you'll need to get it out.

Just find one that the correct size to get it to bite and back out the broken piece.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Nuway tools in Santa Clara, or a plumbing supply store with have the extractors. You tap them in and turn them out.

Are you going to inspect a rod bearing or two?

Where do you get such a thing? I can practice on the pickup tube a And see how well it works and go from there.

i got it at menards. if you dont have menards out there they are like a home depot. ace hardware may even have it. any place that sells parts for lawn sprinklers will have it.

Wow, dodged a big bullit. never thought that would be a problem. Hopefully the bearings are ok. Things have a way of working out.

That's interesting. I've seen two Hemi pickups fail in my short and uneventful life and in both cases the owners told me they didn't check to make sure the pickup contacted the pan. The other item I've noticed is that the stock pickups have rolled threads and the aftermarket ones I've seen have cut threads. IMHO the stress riser at the end of the cut thread is a problem just waiting to happen although I'll admit I haven't seen it cause a problem in practice.

6pakbee, interesting you mentioned the different (cut/rolled) threads as I tried to thread a 1/2 pickup (MP iirc) with a 1/2 NPT die & it would not work & I had no clue what the problem was.

i did check that there was clearance to the bottom of the pan. however, the engine was on a cherry picker with a tire underneath it, and i came out the next morning, and the engine was on the tire. there was still plenty of tension on the chain, so the entire weight of the engine was not resting on the pan.

i didn't think much of it, (because the entire weight of the engine wasn't on the pan), and put the engine in. it was only after it was installed that i noticed the pan was slightly dented in. it didn't seem that bad at all, so i decided i would leave it and deal with it later. never occurred to me that it might have pushed the pan into the pickup and stressed it.

i haven't cleaned out the pan to investigate the bottom of it yet. i assume that if it did contact the bottom of the pan enough to stress it, there will be marks on the inside of the pan, so hopefully that will show me something.
