How did you guys mount the sending unit for your aftermarket mechanical temp gauge into your small block performer RPM intake?? The sending unit threads are larger than any of the holes in the intake.

Do they sell a pipe fitting that adapts the threads from the larger sending unit to the smaller intake hole, or is it best to drill and tap the intake for the larger 1/2" NPT sending unit?

It's a special fitting that should be at a decent parts store.

(1) yes (2) maybe. Someone brought up something priorly about the sender needs a certain amount of depth into the coolant to register properly. I ain't sure if that is valid or not but you might see what others have to say and call Autometer. Is the boss on the intake large enough to go out to 1/2NPT?

Probe should fit so that it is in the flow of the coolant for most consistent accurate readings. If using to many fitting and getting it out of the flow there a chance of air pockets and slower moving coolant than in the main flow.

I went with an electric gauge with my LD4B. The adapter I had for the mech gauge would have sit up tall and looked like crap. A shallower adapter wouldn't work because the sensor bottomed out in the intake. I am more of a BB guy and I find myself annoyed with some of this SB stuff.

Most probes are too deep to fit by just tapping the hole. The fitting that adapts it has a recess inside so the bulb seals. Some cheap gauges have them with them.We got ours at Advanced.IIRC they were like 3 or 4 bucks. The parts guy might have to look for it though.I have good parts guys.Rocky

to solve the depth problem, use autometer 2271. it is a 3/8 npt extension. 2270 for 1/2 npt. to make it fit to your intake, napa or others will have what you need, just bring your intake and extension so they can choose the correct adaptor for you. hope this helps.

Thanks for the input guys. The boss is plenty large to drill and tap. I may just go that route.

Here is a picture of the old intake

Here is the new one with the under-sized hole just left of the water neck:

Should the fittings go like this?:

Or like this?

Put the new temp gauge fitting in the drivers side and use the nipple in the hole on the passenger side. You don't want to look at the heater hose crossing the upper radiator hose.

That's kinda what I was thinking. Thanks a lot.
