My alternator is new, battery is new, but for some reason the alternator won't charge the battery. On of the easiest ways I can tell the alternator is not working is my Holley fuel pump is super quiet...when it is working properly the fuel pump is much louder..LOL. Any ideas?

What alt... is it a single wire or with a external
regulator... if external, full field the reg... if
it still doesnt work.. buy a alt.. but if it full
fields and works then buy a reg

Sorry, but electrical stuff is one thing I don't know very well. It is a stock replacement alternator (not a single wire). I don't know what you mean by "full field the reg"... Can you explain?

A quiet pump is not the best way to know you NEED a volt meter.....period! Then you can check loads and do voltage drop tests.

You have to GROUND the field wire at the voltage regulator to full field the alt. The field wire is the one that does NOT have 12v volt (at the reg). you may simply have a bad ground at the regulator.

You are correct... I screwed up saying what I did...
I was thinking about something else ... I will correct it

Correct me if I'm wrong here... but I think the outside
wire on the reg connector is the field

So the voltage regulator could be the culprit? I replaced it 21 years ago....it might be due. I have a volt meter, but I'll be honest, I really don't know what I'm doing with it.

I had the alternator checked at autozone, it passed their test machine.

This is sad....I can build an engine no problem, but the smallest electrical issue and I'm stumped, heck, if I have more than 2 wires I get lost...lol.

I always check battery voltage with it off, then start it up,if it gains voltage alternator working if it stays same or drops,it is not.Back in the day I changed out diode in alternators when blew lead off, could get about everything at NAPA,doesnt mean I am electrician.Nice car by the way....

You can check the reg like said above.. ground the
field wire... I'm pretty darn sure its the outer one
on the reg... then see if you hear the alt load down
at idle.. or just replace the reg since you had the
alt tested... but I like to test my own junk

Flyfish how many wires go to your alternator 2 field wires or 1. It makes a difference on which regulator you have and how to test it.

I have 1 field wire and the wire that goes to the battery.

What alt do you have? All the mopar alts have 2 field wires that I know of. Ones energized with 12 positive and the other goes to the reg which gets grounded through the reg. It doesnt matter witch post gets energized at the Alt. But the one thats not is the field that goes to the Reg.

But on the regulator, different story. The Top post is the 12 volt feed and the bottom side is the field wire coming from the alt side of the two fields thats not energized by 12 volts.

The alt needs a 12 volt feed as does the reg. The Reg Has to have a good ground to work.

If you have a Mopar Alt it should have three posts Two Field and one Bat.

So your saying you have One field and One Bat. Only two post connections on the Alt?

He has the old mech style reg and alt... it was a
single wire

This looks like the alternator I have (there is a pic of the back of the alt):

Yep thats the old single wire mech reg alt. You can put 12 volts on the field terminal on the alt after unhooking the field wire and it should have full output. Course you can also jump across the reg and full field it as long as the wireing is good. One simple test is make sure your alt output terminal is hot with the key off. If thats not hot you may have a fuse link out. Ron

I thought you would with the year of your car.

Like Ron said check for 12volts at the regulator, with the key "on" not running. If you have power there check to see if you have 12volts DC at the field connection. If you have power in but not out you have a junk regulator.

Normal system voltage should be a little over 12 not running, and around 14- 14.7 running

Have fun, Rod

Ok, I have power at the alternator with the key in the on position. I have conductivity from the field wire to the regulator, but not through the regulator...so I'm guessing the regulator is shot. I'll swap it out this evening after work and report back. Thanks for the help everyone.
