Hey guys!

I'm putting together an 8 3/4 rear using some used parts. I have bought a used cone sure grip, but it I don't have it in my possession just yet to measure.

Anyway, I am trying to order an installation and bearing kit, but most kits say that the included carrier bearings won't work with factory LSD, but will work with a new auburn or TrueTrac or open.

Is the bearing on the stock cone diff different from the others?

Thanks for the help!

It's not the Sure Grip that uses different bearings, it's the housing.
489 and 741/742 cases use different size carrier bearings, either size bearing will press onto a clutch or cone Sure Grip.

Exactly. IF the sg you bought has bearings don't buy anything yet. Chances are good they are fine and you can use them. Hopefully the races are there...

Ah, ok, I was under the impression that the inside diameter of the bearings were different to deal with certain carriers. I have a 489 housing... I wonder why the install kits have that warning.

I am inclined to reuse the bearings that come with the used SG, but I also want to minimize the chance of it being noisy. The bearings on my current open carrier have pitted races.

Notes:Carrier bearings in this kit will not with with a factory sure-grip differential.

Richmond Gear's website makes zero mention of that kit not fitting factory SureGrip installations. It does have a different bearing kit for SPOOL applications though. I suggest you call them Monday and ask for clarification. Summit has been know to be wrong.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

The cone-type SG bearing is 2" ID, the clutch-type is smaller 1.8". Both have the same OD so they'll fit in any housing.

Only if they are BRAND NEW BEARINGS , cone type are metal chip generating pieces of GARBAGE , they destroy bearings and gears BY DESIGN ...

Order a kit for a 489 , it will have the bearings you need.

I hope you are disassembling that unit and checking to make sure it's not already junk ...

The bearings that are on the unit I am getting are used, but I will be checking everything out, and replace bearings if the old ones look at all bad... or might just get the kit anyway... still haven't decided actually. It is only $100 from Summit which I need to order a crush sleeve eliminator from anyway.

If the cones have bottomed out, I will follow the instructions for machining the faces & adding shims to add some more life to it.

Thanks!
