I am working on removing some unnecessary emissions items from my Slant 6. The engine is a 1976 in a 1972 Dart.

One of the items im doing away with is the A.I.R. system(We are Emissions exempt in this area anyway) There isnt an A.I.R. pump but what there is ,is a hose that goes into the bottom of the air cleaner which attaches to a check valve and then a metal tube that goes to the back of the cylinder head.

That metal tubing is rusted through anyway and I was wondering just what(if anything) bad might happen if I plug the passage at the back of the cylinder head. Seems all it does is pump air...Right?

A Pic is attached as reference, image is from before I got the car home.

Run the vaccum advance straight to the carb and bypass the solenoid on the air cleaner. Flip the EGR valve over so it is blocked off. I plugged everthing except the PCV on my carb. The vacuum amplifier is bypassed.

Just block it off. I did that on my 360 exhaust manifolds on my van.

To answer your question, that A.I.R. item is just a one way check valve that allows a little gulp of air into the exhaust stream (in the head) when there is a vacuum pulsation. Its not a pump. The extra oxygen is desired in the exhaust in order to better enable the CAT to burn off remaining hydrocarbons--it helps the cat do its job.

You can remove it--and as you said, plug the opening in the head. MAy as well remove the cat too.

Well thats the good thing, the car is a 72 and doesnt have a cat(engine is a 76,hence the emissions garbage)

You might want to check AZ emissions laws. A friend of mine lived several years in Tucson, and the state compelled him to go out and RE install every piece of $$$$ on his old 70 3/4 T Chev p/u to pass the state smog. This included a silly spacer to connect the breather hose, which was already connected to the filter, re-finding the junk hardware for the snorkel heat, and a few other things, and bear in mind this is a 3/4 T which had no smog pump, and didn't have nearly the stringent specs for 1/2T and pass. cars.

Does your state vary from county to county?

The reasons to remove this stuff are:
1. To make it look better. Doesn't apply to a slant six, unless you are hopping it up.
2. To increase power/mileage due to the junk they put on. Doesn't apply to the pulse air system, does to the EGR. Make sure the PCV is working properly.
3. If the parts are broken and you don't want to replace. Doesn't apply to the pulse air system.
In other words, just leave it alone, unless it's making a racket or leaking.

I believe so,I know emissions arent required in the county I live in (Cochise) and I think the only places in the state that do smog checks are Tucson and Phoenix. Theres a grey area on smogging the vehicle if you reguarly commute to those 2 larger cities IIRC

Does a 72 need to be smogged in AZ?

I don't think OSAC valves were around in '72.

My air hose/pipe was rusted through, too, so I removed the pipe, cut the flange from the pipe, plug welded the hole, and re-attached the flange to the head.

Well that answers that,What you describe is EXACTLY what I had in mind.Your engine didnt suffer any ill effects did it?

When I swapped from a 198 to a 225 in my Swinger, I got a later 225. Since emissions testing wasn't necessary where I lived, I junked all that stuff.

For the port at the back of the head, since I didn't have a welder, I removed the tube, and cut it about 3/4" an inch away from the ring that bolts to the head. I hammered the remainder of the tube down into the ring as best I could, then brazed it to seal it. Then I just bolted it back on the head. Once everything is installed, you can't even tell it's there.

I also made a nice little block-off plate for the EGR valve since I was using a Super-Six intake.

Says who? Slants benefit from a nice, clean engine compartment just as much as V8s.

I knew that was going to hit a true believer!
Take a look at the picture at the top. If he is going to do a full cleanup, and paint the engine, I'd agree. If he's just pulling stuff off (a common 70's thought) and then selling the car, what's the point? As someone who had to research, find and install a bunch of stuff like this for the dealer I used to work for, I can tell you that a lot of backyard guys just hack and slash without anything more than "I'm gonna take off all that smog stuff" in their head. If it doesn't hurt anything and they are going to move the vehicle soon anyway, they are not doing anything constructive.

I didn't look like a '76 air cleaner housing to me and I didn't see an OSAC valve in the pic, but you're right, I didn't read closely enough.

No ill effects from blocking off that exhaust port, SWPC. It might even be easier to cut a new plate than to plug weld the 3/4"(?) hole on the existing piece.

You can rotate the EGR 180* and voila, a block-off plate.

SWPC- you have signed up over at www.slantsix.org , right?
