Im thinking of using 'solid' hangers on my exhaust, as I broke one of the rubber strap type hangers.

Would it be a problem that the exahaust system is completely solid, or does it need to flex some as the rubber hanger would allow? (Or is the rubber more to lower vibration and noise than flexibility?)

actually the system grows in length when it heats up, the rubber mount allows for this, in addition to suppressing vibration. I would try to have SOME rubber at the mounting/hanging point to allow for a little 'wiggle'. System would also be prone to cracking if securely/rigidly mounted.

Can't you just get another rubber hanger?

Yes, I actually have enough of the strap to just cut off the broken part and use more, but the hanger was only on the car for a few months and less than 100 miles and it already gave out. I should probably have more than one hanging point (per side) in the back.

If the only exhaust system movement needed is for heat expansion, then I might double one of those rubber straps over and use it on a very short section.

You need two per side. You can get by with one if you have an abreviated system that stops short of the rear axle. If your exiting out the rear of the car that is too much weight for a single rubber strap to handle.

I should have mentioned, but it's a 3" x pipe system with turndowns right by the axles.

Another thought to consider, unless you have solid motor mounts, your engine moves a bit also. I've always thought of this as the chief reason for the exhaust to be allowed to move too
