for a one time deal save your money use a wrench & with care you'll be fine. I think the spec is 125 lbs but on an upper ball joint just crank it tight.

Most any shop thar does front end work will have one, talk to the mechanic, leave a deposit & he'll probably let you use it..
That's what I did... an old guy in town had one and I paid him $20 to use it. It can be done another way, but it took the socket, a breaker bar and a cheater pipe to break my old one loose. I'd hate to try that with a pipe wrench. if you are just going back together with clean new stuff, it's still nice to have the right tool for the job. Some parts houses have them for loaners....

Do I really need to buy the $40 socket to install the upper ball joints in my 68 B-body? Are there any other options?
I bought a set of 2 for bigger and smaller one... for 50.00
well worth it if you do any kinda work yourself....

I've done it both ways. Socket is much better. If you have to buy one do it. You probably have other Mopar buddies. You can get your money back by renting it to them for a small fee. Keep the amount small; you'll keep your friends and still come out OK. Keep the control arm on the car and use an impact wrench for removal. Installation torque is 125 ft.lbs. minimum. I usually go 150 ft.lbs.
That reminds me... I forget mine every time I go to buddies house.... Hope he didn't rent it out

Use the proper socket on a 3/4" breaker bar.
I just go to Advance Auto and "rent" their loaner ball joint replacement tool kit.
They tell me to return it within 90 days, then they credit the full $150 and change back to my credit card.
No fuss at all, but I did go to Harbor Freight and buy a 3/4 breaker bar for around $12 or so. I've used the breaker bar with a 3/4 to 1/2 adapter afew times, so its paid for itself too.
