I just saw a report of a street racing accident which ended with the injury of a landscaper on cbs5az.com here in Phoenix. The reporter was Sean McLaughlin and he used the term street race, not drag race. I followed up with an e-mail to applaud him on knowing the difference. Anyone wanting to do the same his e-mail is sean.mclaughlin@cbs5az.com.

Ya, I saw that, but not ready to give him an attaboy. Seems there was only one car involved so he coulda used "speeding".

For awhile there - all of local media called every speed related crash a "drag racing" incident… even if there was just a single car involved and they guy was drunk and fell asleep at the wheel 50 miles from town on a 1-lane road.

So it HAS gotten better.

Most of my buddies and I have "drag raced" on "back streets" up here since the late 80`s and as far as I know there has not been one crash. One guy did fly off into the desert racing himself but he and his car were fine. It`s been around since the charriot days and isn`t going away forever trust me. With Fontucky opened again maybe it will help, maybe not. As the officer told me a while back; The V-8 guys are fine as long as we keep it cool but the ricers are the REAL problem around here and if caught they will crush their cars.............

The v8 guys are fine because our cars usually don't handle worth a sh!t so its a quick blast between the lights and that's it. The ricers are a menace because the cars do handle but the drivers can't handle the cars. In these parts these guys and the crotch rocket crowd usually have a group race from point A to point B BUT the two points are 60 miles apart and involve major highways and traffic.

who cares what they call it? drag racing started on the streets and there is still drag racing going on all across the country on the streets. doesn't affect legal drag racing at all. i don't do it any more, but if some one wants to risk everything have it it.

I`m willing to go to deserted roads as my video shows and get it done then get out and even the Highway Patroll showed up and didn`t do squat.........they just park, make there presence known and we bail. To each his own I guess................

For the Az. posters here, particularly inmetro Phoenix, call the PD or City Council & tell 'em you want the anti streetracing program re-established. We had good luck with it in the 90s & politics made it go away. We had some good people in the program both civilian & LE & it went away........

So how did it work out exactly..............



At it's highest point, we (Phx PD Drag Race Team) had 3 cars--1 S/ST car & 2 S/G cars. We would attend public functions, go to schools & race, all the time advocating leagl racing instead of on the street & offer the streetracers the opportuntity to run us at the track, usually SpeedWorld. We had great support from businesses & the old Az. Outlaw Streetcar Assoc. So much so that when one of our memebers was injured in a line-of-duty accident the Assoc. held a benefit race for him at SpeedWorld. Our participation wasn't restricted to just the Valley. At their expense, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police invited us to Edmonton, Alberta to show/help them develop their own program.
Our program wsn't unlike the LAPD & the Int'l Brotherhood of Streetracers program,though on a much smaller scale.
I was one of the team's founding memebers. Since then I've retired & am an active member in the Reserve Div. I would suggest that those thinking the program should be reactivated contact Phx Pd, its Reserve Div. or PM me as I would be really interested in seeing the program reactivated.

I like the idea but as you know, street racing will still continue good or bad. Hell I`m 53 this Sat. and still love the excitement but god forbid anything bad happens...........

I, for one, would support this program anyway I can. Since I'm an instructor at UTI, I deal with the younger generation of wanna-be racers everyday. I get so tired of hearing them talk about "racing" on the street/freeway.

racing is done on a racetrack...anywhere else is just speeding!

Keyword; Punk kids..............big difference between us and them plus if anyone of them got in my car for a blast it would probably be his/her last.

My rule has always been - don't hit the loud pedal any place you wouldn't shoot a gun. The young "rice balls" don't seem to understand the risks of cross-streets and other traffic on the roads. Seeing them play "Ricky Bobby" thru traffic just makes my blood boil. I've seen the places the idiots try to race, and it's totally irresponsible to say the least. We used to drive 25 miles out of town and away from everybody to race when we were young. The LEOs knew full well what we were doing and where we were doing it at. They didn't have any issues with it until the crowds got big and the collective IQ dropped to "full retard". The spectating crowds were the problem.

"Late model" kids just try to emulate the FnF movies and really don't care how many people they put into harm's way with their recklessness.

The fact is, streetracing will always exist. We were just trying to show people that A) hotrodders aren't a bunch of 50s-style dirtbags & B) show the streetracers just how much safer & less hassle it is to run on the track & perhaps pick-up some speed secrets.
It was all very basic PR stuff but geared to auto enthusiaists. Older guys would come up & ask us about stuff or reminise (spl?), and young guys would challenge our knowledge, want to race us or actually want to join the PD once they found out this was just one of the things they could do on the Dept. At the time, the Chief said it was one of the best programs the Dept had.......

To be honest, we did, too!
One night we were in the staging lanes & some guys come up to us bragging about what they had & how they could beat us. Our driver at the time thought he knew everything but just sat there dumbfounded. I proceeded to agree to the race, laid down some terms & even asked if they were talking a money-run. Our driver looked visibly shaken, the guys stammered something about their car "isn't here tonight" (yeah,right!) and walked off. We sure didn't win all our races but we sure weren't scared (well maybe our guy that night was ) of running most guys.........
