First of all, I know that asking about favorite cams is like asking who has the best grandchildren/what is the best color for a race car/best slicks ect, ect, but here goes.
My combo is +.030 440 w/ Ross dome pistons & H beam rods, stock stroke forged crank, unported Edelbrock RPM heads, Victor intake, 1050 Holley dominator, 2" Hooker super comp headers, 727 trans, Turbo Action "J" converter in a 3100 lb E body, Dana rear w/ 4.56, 11.5 x29.5 slicks. Race only with a mix of 1/4 and 1/8 mile. I am currently running a MP .590 solid lift cam.
A roller is not in my budget at this time, so I want to stick with a solid flat tappet.
Is there a more suitable cam for my combo? What will different lift do for me? What about duration?

Thanks,
Brian

I'm sure there is BUT you might be wasting money on
it with your stock heads... I would believe you would
be better off porting the heads... then at a later time
change cams...... JMO

I would be in favor of porting the heads, and putting some beehive springs on it and the highest rocker ratio the whole deal will tolerate. I used an ERSON 1.75 ratio rocker many years ago on a 590 cam with ported 906 heads, and it worked well. If you don't have this cam advanced, you can work with that also. My friend Joe is making great power running that cam in a 446 with it in a 100!

His name escapes me but the guy on here who dyno'd the purple shafts against other cams and the similar size hughes cam made over 20 hp more than the .590.
My car is similar setup and weight to yours but my heads are ported by MCH and i reckon as it is, it would do a 10.0? with the 950 hp holley.

I believe that was Keith Dunnik and I think it was tested on a SB

Like others said, port the heads and throw on some higher ratio rockers to work better with the heads.

A cam change (staying flat tappet) might get you 1, maybe 2, tenths. A good port job could possibly find you twice that much.

Well, there is a good reason that I ask the questions. I changed oil and filter this week and when I cut the filter open it glittered at me. I also found several (3 or 4) small slivers of metal in it. A magnet picked up most of it. I then pulled the intake to have a look at the cam and lifters and found the #1 Ex lobe starting to go bad. Also a couple of other lobes are starting to show some distress. I have no choice now but to change the cam, and wasn't sure if I had the best choice of cam for me or not. (this cam has well over 1000 passes and has been in three different engines)
I have a OLD Cam Dynamics solid lift cam that I used in the mid 1990's that I am going to put in for now. It's a .585 lift, 310 duration, 106*, not much different than the .590 purple cam. What will 2* less duration and .005" less lift do?Also, the duration at .050" on the .590 is 265*, the Cam Dynamics is 275*. What will that change?
I know this is a lot of questions, but I'm sure to get schooled here

Thanks,
Brian

The MP 590 is about 271* @ .050 duration, and it is a bad ass cam. Your specs are waay off. You havent measured one yourself, as i can tell

You are correct Mike. I used the cam card for both cams. How do I check duration of a cam? And what does changing the duration of a cam do for performance?(torque,hp,rpm range, idle smoothness... )
Thanks,
Brian

Brian that old Cam Dynamics 275 @ .050 is almost a exact replica of the MP 590 It does have 3* more duration @ .050. It will run just the same as the 590, maybe just a touch faster because of the extra duration.

A member here once swapped out the mp 590 for a Comp cam 274/282 @.050 .590/.609 on a 108 LSA and didnt see any realistic gains, even though the cam was bigger and had more lift. The LSA was more spread by 2* but overall same Et.

I agree with you on using that old Cam Dynamics cam. To measure a cams duration you need to measure it with a degree wheel.

If you want the same ETs you were running just stick the .585 in it.
If you want to go faster then stick the comp .650 in it.

I almost was going to suggest the exact same thing/cam.

Its big though, 290/290 @ .050 .650/.650 on a 108 LSA Better have enough vert.

Although using the Cam Dynamics cam he has is a reasonable choice if he was happy with the way the MP 0.590" ran. Here is a newer alternative to the Comp 290, 0.650".

Comp Cams MM305S-10
This is what I measured:
305º/320º@.020", 279º/287º@.050", 197º/200º@.200", 143º/143º@.300", 112º/107º@.350", 0.433"/0.420" lobe,
110 LSA (with 1.5 = 0.650/0.630)

What CR does the motor have?

The CR on my engine is 12.5:1. My converter is a Turbo Action "J" converter, should be plenty .
I just put a Comp Cams .650/.650 (the old McCandless grind, I think) in a friends 541 ci, Indy iron headed, Mega block engine. It just went a 5.96/115 (1/8)yesterday. I looked at that cam, but was thinking it was probably too much, given my unported RPM's heads. No since in subjecting the engine (valve train) to all that added strain, for no gain.
I'll take all the "schooling" that you guys will give.

Thanks,
Brian

I'm considering the .650 for my car with 915's as my current cam is starting to go away like yours.
Bet your car would scoot with CNC'd RPM's and that Comp .650
