I located a 68 dart 273 car for sale and want to check to see if numbers are right. Where did Chrysler stamp the body to coincide with the VIN?

In '68 they did NOT!

The body stampings are the "Shipping Order Number", you need a broadcast sheet or other paperwork to match the S.O.# to the VIN.

Certicard should also be able to tie the SO number and VIN together.

Bummer. The car is an old race car and has been cut up a bit. Fender tag and broadcast are long gone. I just found out the guy who has it now threw the dash away because he was making an aluminum dash, VIN tag is gone too. I want to build a gasser out of it because its too far gone to restore. Interior is bare and has glass front end. I wanted to be able to title it and go to cruise nights but am worried about the Law. Any suggestions?

You are SOL. The only way to do it is get a dash with VIN and title for another 68 Dart and do it the unapproved Moparts way... Without any other docs there is no way the popo can tell if it is legit or not...

Can you get an "assembled" title like they do for hot rods. Hate to see another old mopar go to the scrap yard. That makes me cry

The 'popo' AKA police can contact the NICB who do have a database which does have the body numbers on microfiche & they can be linked to the original VIN.

A couple of years ago a guy in CA had a '68 Barracuda with a 1969 dash & VIN, the CHPs were made aware of it by a member of the NICB & his title was pulled since it did not match the body. They also checked to see if the '68 body was stolen. He was told to go to the CA DMV & apply for a state issued VIN.

I was just telling him his only cheap option. I am sure the police would be happy to get his SO#'s off the car to help him get a legit title. A few years ago I had to train an Illinois Secretary of State police inspector about SO#'s and VINS on 68-earlier cars, they had NO CLUE!

There is no certicard or even inner aprons. Data tag is gone. Its an old race car and back then I'm guessing they didn't care. I like the plan to have the police look at the car and check the database. I know the cops and they will ask me where the numbers are? I didnt find one on the LH trunk lip, it it stamped anywhere else? I just want to have a VIN in case I'm stopped for going too slow. I have a strong running 440 and just bought a tunnel ram. I know its not resto stuff but its better than the crusher! Thanks, your help is appreciated.

Get a state issued VIN ???

Call the DMV and find out what needs to be done to get one.

just treat it as a homemade, streetable dune buggy, etc., most States will list it as a "self-made", "homemade" etc., but not as what it may have been on the new title.

There should be an SO# on the left trunk rail, did you scrape all the weatherstrip sealer and paint off the rail? You have to get down to bare metal to see it. The police will likely miss it also unless you do some due diligence and find it first.

I looked at my Coronet to find locations. The only numbers I found looked like part numbers. I'll go scrape the paint off.

That is pretty cool, JW! I had a first day of production 69 383 auto GTS and never took the time to look for the VIN's!

When / if you do make sure you get a 340 or 383 tag.
