Looking for the correct paint mark colors and sequence for a 3.91 8 3/4" Sure Grip rear end for a '71 Cuda. I've attached a pic of my '71 GTX rear for reference as it has a 3.55. Specifically the 4 paint daubs on the third member. Thanks.

Thanks. Looks like 3 orange for me. One to denote SG and 2 for the 3.91.

Listen up, those with egg on their faces: That's a YOKE, not a yolk. Whoever originally made that old chart (surely not Mopar) is not the only one.

LOL I didn't catch that when I read it. Too funny.

Seeing that picture really wants me to restore mine the correct way, it's already in the car, but I would take it out just to do it correctly after seeing this.

What paint do you use on the 3rd member? How exactly is the orange applied on/around the filler plug to denote Sure Grip fluid? The orange mark under the 3rd member is a second Sure Grip identification mark? Is there any standard for exactly where, the "correct" shade of the color on the chart and how wide/long the markings are on the underside of the 3rd member for the gear identification? How do you get the lettering painted so nicely on the axle housing and how do you know which numbers/letters go on it?

Sorry for the threadjack, but this got me thinking.

"Correct" shade doesn't exist because of different vendors using their own paints. See:

http://www.iccahome.org/

...scroll down and click on "Paint markings".

Also see old discussions:

For correct looking numbers with more paint at the edges than in the center, some say you'll need a rubber stamp, which squishes the paint to the edges.

Here's an idea for an axle dolly.
