Hey guys, I've got a small block out of a '68 Sport satellite and want to know what it is. Don't know if the motor is orig, to the car. I took a picture of the cast numbers found on the left side of the block. In the numbers is "318" so is it a 318ci? The motor has what looks to be a factory 4bbl intake. Also, there were weights on the torque converter which may help someone figure out what exactly I have. I'm looking to sell it so what is a rough idea of what it's worth? I've never had it running, never apart, it turns over by hand, no water in it Complete minus acessories. Thanks!

Well, its a 318. It isnt worth much. The 4bbl manifold is not original to the car, because the 318 wasnt available with a factory 4bbl until 1978. However, your 318 appears to have been painted blue originally. In 1968, the correct color would have been red. Im guessing someone swapped a newer 318 into your car at some point in time.
The weights on the converter are kind of puzzling. The only small block with a weighted converter would be a 360, or a 1973 340. Either way, the 318 was internally balanced. Does the balancer have a counterweight? How about some more pics

The weights are two pieces of metal at the edge, by the threaded mounts for the converter bolts. They are close together but not touching. The front dampener is rubber type with a metal ring on the outside of the rubber that has drill marks for balancing. There is NO sign of red, this has been a blue motor all it's life. Its dark now but I'll get some more pics when I can. I just want an idea of what I have so I can describe it the best I can when I put an ad. to sell it. Thanks!

How big are the weights? Alot of converters have tiny ones to balance the converter itself. If they are big thick weights like 1/4 " then it must have a 360 converter in it. Its definitly a mid 70's 318, nothing special.

Yea, it must be the wrong converter because they are big weights, not little ones for the converter itself. Thanks guys!

not to say that you have anything special but who knows what has been done to it in the past also just for info my X block has 318 cast in the side of it just like that along with the big X on the end also someone could of dropped a 340 cast crank in the block at some time

The 340 cast crank is the same part # they used in 318s of the era. The extra weight is needed because they used the same crank in the 2 motors but two different pistons. The 340 used heavier pistons but the same crank so they had to add weight to the converter and balancer to make up for the heavier pistons.
If it is a factory converter it is from a 360 because the 340 did not come with 904s.
