I have the dash apart and thought that it I should lube the speedometer cable.

What do you guys recommend for lube?

How should I do it, a few squirts from the top?

Does the speedometer need any lubing?

72 E body.

Thanks

I just put a new one in yesterday. Instructions said pull cable out and grease lightly along the entire length not getting any on the ends. They included lube, it was green and like a thinner bearing grease. It doesn't take a lot.

when I bought a new one, they also used grease.
it was red and looked like the mobile one grease I have used in the past.

if you feel like it, pull the whole cable.
clean out the gunk in it by soaking it in cleaner, and then let it dry out.
coat the inner cable with grease and put it back together.

or you can just pull the inner portion out and coat it with grease and slide it back in. you will have to spin the inner portion a bit to get it to seat into the transmission when you put it back.

I had my dash out to replace my voltage limiter so I thought the same thing...let me lube the speedo cable. Ever since then the speedometer needle bounces. I have since heard that the old cable lube was a bit waxy to dampen the cable. Not sure what is true, but now I wonder if the old adage; 'if it aint broke don't fix it' is true.
Please post what you end up using and how it works out...I want my old smooth needle back.

I replaced mine about 3 yrs ago. Opened the package and installed it. No lube or anything. Works good and doesn't bounce.

You probably have a kink in the cable or cable housing somewhere. Never heard of anything dampening a speedo cable. Take it loose and turn one end very slowly, feeling for any roughness or binding. Years ago I had one like that, and finally had to replace the cable housing after a couple of relubes and new inner cables.

I didn't do anything. The speedo has been fine and I decided not to mess with it.
