How often should I change the bronze distributor gear? I have a 500" stroker with a hydraulic roller cam.

It depends on how many miles you drive. I put maybe 2000 miles on my car during the summer. I pull the gear every winter and look it over. Although it has never looked really worn I almost always replace it.

Is the cam a steel billet roller core or a cast core like the OEM cams? If steel core cam and oil pump drive gear on it look at the bronze gear very carefully, there are good gears that last forever and there are others that don't

Mine only wears under the bronze gear were it meets up whit the bushing for the shaft and i swapt mine out now after two summers of driving it ! The push rod for the fuel pump whas looking like new on the bronze tip (No Wear at al) so i put that in again. I should metion that i run a std mellings oil pump in my engine so if you have a HV pump there probably is more wear on yours

This is such an easy problem to solve !

The reason either wears is because they are similar netals - both being bronze. Its a law of physics that two similar metals in a friction situation will cause one or both surfaces to wear.

So to solve the problem you put a thin steel shim between the two and kiss the problem goodbye.

Now the thinnest shim I've found is a torrington bearing thrust washer that is .030" thick so I have the bottom shoulder on the gear taken off (approx. .030) on a lathe.

My small block one from Milidon has been on back-order. Says it MAY ship at the end of March. Are the gears on the big block and small block the same? If so I may have to switch some gears.
