Well more like it starts for 3 seconds and dies like clock work. Has been setting for a couple of years, put a battery in it and now this. I have read it's common for the security system to cause this. The security light comes on for the bulb test but goes off like the rest of the lights do. But when checking for codes with a scanner leaving the key on for a few the security light and low fuel light comes back on and burn steady and the odometer flashes. When it does run for 3 seconds the tach doesn't work but my scan tool does show rpms. Does not have a coded key (plain black not grey). Don't have a key fob. I've tried locking both doors and unlocking each with the key but no change. Also bridged the fuel pump relay and ASD relay no change. I don't have a DRB scan tool to see if the CTM is communicating with the PCM. Any suggestions on what I could check would be greatly appreciated. Does anybody know what the flashing odometer means or is it normal when you hook a scanner to it? Thanks in advance for any help!

Maybe some of the old gasoline is still in the fuel system and continuing to cause your problem.

Could be, I was going to put a gauge on it but there's no schrader valve and I'd have to tee into the line. Pretty cold here now to be doing that! I can mash the gas pedal and it'll rev until the 3 seconds are up. That's what's making me think it's a security issue because it quits like clock work every time (about 3 seconds.) But I'm not getting any horns, flashing lights, or even a security light on or blinking unless I leave the key on several minutes. I'll check the gas. Thanks!

Have you or anyone swap the PCM?

Not to my knowledge. I'm trying to get it running for a friend. Told him it just showed a low voltage tps code. He said he had already put a new one on. He didn't mention anything about changing the pcm.

I have a 99 doing close to the same thing, I was told the ignition switch was bad about going out on them and to try that. Not high on my priorities so I haven't done it yet. I swap the PCM between it and my 97 for a cruise issue and the 97 has run fine since probably 2 years ago, it is driven most days. The 99 also ran fine for a time after the swap but I went ot move it one day and this, it has a bad trans so it is only driven as a yard truck, so I would be interested in what swapping the PCM can do.

Both of mine are 4WD/318/3.91s, virtually identical except for the color.

This one's a 318 4WD as well. If I figure it out I'll post what it was. Thanks for the info.

Do you have a thin black key or thick grey key?

Just because he has a black key doesn't mean its not suppose to have a grey key.... assuming it is just a black key car, try cycling key on and off three times. On the third time leave the key on. It should display some p codes across the odometer. I'm leaning towards a pcm or maybe rodant damage wires from sitting...

My 97 & 99 are black keys as was my 98 Durango so I believe all of them from that era are black key units.

Got it running today. Unplugged the Central Timer Module to the right of the glove box. Same problem. Plugged it back up and it started and stayed running. Connector must not have been making up or something. Just wanted to pass the info along. Might help somebody else out someday.

Its just that you powered down the central timer module. I had a few trucks over the years come in with the timer module locked and once I unhooked it from power and woke it back up it worked fine. Part of the security system and it will lock like that sometimes. And I never replaced the central timer module for it and none have ever come back. I was going to replace the first central timer module on the first truck it happened to but Mopar tech line told me not too so I did not. And as I said I have not had any comeback saying it happened any more. The start and stalls tells me yours was stuck in the security on mode. You should be good now. Ron
