Just got back home after watching a full day of NHRA racing at Wildhorse. Beautiful day and lots of great racing and beautiful cars. A little disappointing to see many of the big boys coming in to today's qualifying in the top half of the field making half passes. Won't mention any names but his initials are John Force - and many others. I can understand the reasoning ($), but the fans come to see these guys make full passes down the track - every time they go down the track. I felt a little "short sheeted". I feel better now.

half passes?

like maybe they smoked the tires or rattled the tires....and at that point it is senseless to keep your foot in it cause it will blow up or crash...LOL

Ya, well there was a few of those mixed in, but I've been around long enough to know the difference. Overwhelming # of half passes for those previously qualified in the top 1/3 of the field - IMO.

you should run over to the pits of those teams only making half passes and ask for half of your money back.....

Could they be working on starting line tunes? By the time you drop the hammer and get out of it 2 seconds are gone and they are more than half way there.

At a national event..you get 4 quality shots.

Something probably happens during the run that the driver aborts the run...cost too much money just to make a half pass...

I had DVR'd the qualifying and watched it this morning. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Looked like changing conditions to me and they were having trouble keeping up is all.

I did see on the Bullet yesterday that people were accusing Force of making too many good runs this year and cheating again. Maybe John reads the Bullet too.

Nothing about cheating on this thread. Force made 2 qualifying passes on Friday - one was the 3.99 pas that qualified him @ # 1 at the time. Made 2 more passes on Saturday. Both were half passes, the last one near the end of session #4. I saw both those passes and I saw nothing wrong with ether pass. He just got out of the throttle. Same thing with Capps last pass of session #4. His 3rd pass ( early Sat afternoon ) was real strong and put him in the top 4 I think. Nothing wrong with his 4th pass that I could see. He just got out of the throttle. Maybe my eyes aren't as good as they used to be and they all had some kind of problem that I just didn't see - and they occurred after they were safely in the field. I guess I should give them the benefit of the doubt and say they were just pushing the track to see where the limits were. Pretty sure they didn't have any engine issues on those passes.

If it was mainly passes in the left lane......then its fully explainable. That track is nowhere near national event quality. The left lane has so terrible issues. There are 2 huge bumps in that lane. They rushed the new surface and it showed. Mike Rice (D7)even rolled his eyes when we joked that the new surface would see track records.

Most of the typical damamges done to any drag race motor on a regular track happens in the last half of the track If you knew what you could do in qualifying on the last half of the track and knew that the track would change as the day cahnges, sun on the track, weather changes and so on would you be tempted to really hit it hard on the first half and lift if it stuck up to half track I have no idea on the current prices of the blowers, I know they replace the blower belt after every run. A lot of blower explosion are cause by hydraulicing(SP?) the motor in the last three hundred feet of the track, probally after when a blower belt breaks at WOT Maybe not

It may still have the bumps - but it's still better than the Pro-Stock rolling single "hump" it used to have a few years ago in the left lane that would pitch mine up into the air and point it at the wall.

What did NHRA spray on the new concrete to make it have a solid black color all the way out to the wall? I'm assuming they did that to make it heat evenly in the sun?

Point I was trying to make. I can't remember, but I am pretty sure at least one of Forces last 2 aborted attempts was in the left lane and I am sure Capp's last pass was in the left lane also, so maybe they were just coming loose in that lane and I didn't see that. It just looked suspicious to me at the time. I can surely understand saving parts, but, again, the fans paid to see full runs if there weren't any problems with the run.

That was pretty neat when they overlay-ed the graphs from Erica Enders passes from testing a few weeks ago to this weekend on the same track. They did address some issues in a very short time with the track and it will only get better with time. They also went on to explain how they make shock adjustments and change shift RPM's so they didn't shift going over the bumps. The GOPRO camera shots from Vincent Nobiles car making a pass was also great. I think that a few of our members that were complaining a few weeks ago about no time slips, speakers, scoreboards, and a few other items can relax now and thank God they have a very nice track to race on. Thanks also go out to NHRA for starting on time and some GREAT TV coverage. GO Mopar.

For sure on that. They ( the track ) stepped up to the plate in a lot of areas. Score boards are first class along with a nice big instant replay screen. Scales looked new or updated. Some of the fully paved pit areas looked improved on also. My next race there is on the 8th and I am looking forward to it. Also pretty sure I won't have to adjust my shift points to miss the bumps .

I've instinctively avoided the left lane for years. No changes of shift points though. I'm in high gear long before the bump.

Think about it Folks! If ya got 16 cars in a 16 car field, ya got tons of data and unspent dollars go in the kitty, Why Beat Up Your Stuff??
Just my humble opinion

Prock was saying in one of the interviews that they'd been working on the short times and had made progress there, which had translated to ET/MPH the rest of the way. Possibly they were just testing/confirming a range of settings to see what they could apply to the track.

The track was so bad that Force set a track record.. Go Figure..

Seriously though.. It is smoother than it has been in many years..

And it was the right lane that Enders was talking about being bumpy, not the left..

Chris..
