Although I do make and sell brackets to allow you to install two dash speakers in place of the OEM single speaker, this is not a "FOR SALE" ad. I intend for this thread to be used for a discussion of the problems encountered and the solutions found for particular speaker installation issues.

If there's a bracket modification I can make to avoid the problems, I am more than happy to do so. If it's a matter of speaker design and choice, there's not much I can do, other than refer you to those who have successfully worked around the issues.

Let the discussion begin...

There's a difference between ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance is not knowing any better. Stupidity is knowing, yet doing it anyway.

I used your bracket with Kicker KS35 speakers in my 1969 Barracuda. I had to add thick weatherstrip to the bracket to space it down a bit. But overall it fit great, and sounds much better than stock.

For the 66-67 b-body bracket the speakers need to be moved closed together so there is more room around the mounting studs on the speaker grate. If you want I can measure when I get home.

Jerry..
There are a couple of variables to consider that directly affects its height and clearance..
1. The brand of speaker, some are deeper than others due to magnet size
2. The speaker can be mounted from the top or the bottom, again depends upon selected speaker brand

The use of foam tape is interesting for sealing the speakers/mounting plate to the dash but again the variable factor is how much clearance is available under neath the dash..

Just my $0.05...

I havn't installed mine yet but I don't think there should be any issues. I used 4" speakers so I had to mount them underneith. I used some 1/4" plastic spacers so the speakers wouldn't stick above the mounting bracket. I used 3/8" foam around the speakers to take up the gap from the spacers.

I might add some foam around the top edge of the bracket. It all depends on how it mounts up. If the screw heads hit the dash frame, I'll add foam and spacers to the bracket.

I tried the same set up on my 70 Sport Satellite. However, with it being an A/C car (yes I put it all back and it operates), the heater controls and vacuum lines did not have enough room for the double speaker . . . had to go back to original single speaker for am radio and use 6x9's in the package tray for the hidden stereo . . . it is all about fitting and trying when you are looking for the modification from stock . . . good luck.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks for starting the thread - I have been looking for an answer to this question for a while. It's well known that E-Bodies have very limited clearance underneath the dash speaker before hitting the metal dash frame on one side. The stock speaker was pretty shallow and had a small magnet that did not interfere. My frame is installed, powder coated and I do not want to hack it up. If I knew your bracket, maybe with particular speakers, would clear without mods I'd be in for one.

and to further this along - Jerry, if you over cut the speaker holes instead of making them an exact fit. guys, when you drill the holes in the bracket to mount the speaker, over size the holes. this will give you some wiggle room when you button everything up. and the foam tape idea is perfect to lower the bracket for dash clearance.

My first bracket design was for my son's '74 Dart Sport to add a pair of Volfenhag 3.5" two-way speakers. Those speakers have two features going for them. A built-in raised ring allows the speaker to mount flush to the bracket's bottom surface without making contact with the flexible rubber surround. They also have low-profile center tweeter cones which avoid making contact with the underside of the dash grill. This all makes for a very compact installation. Of course, this was in an A-body dash with plenty of room below.

If clearance is limited in your particular case, top mounting your speakers through the bracket openings would gain you approximately 0.080", the material thickness. Slipping washers or thin spacers between the bracket and speaker mounting flanges could provide a little more lift, but the limiting factor then becomes available clearance above the center cone.

Choosing the right speaker is critical.

I made my own bracket with 4'' speakers, put the speakers as close together as possible and a little offset to the front.

68 Satellite with A/C.
