520 RB with a 1050 dom.i got my in gear idle at 14.5 on the afr guage.kruz is at 14.8.So i go to the track to do some t&t and they tell me i have to run a air filter(no hood).I have a K.N 2 in. by 14 w/a mesh top.when i put the air filter on, my AFR goes thru the roof.If i rev it up i can get it back down to 15.00 but then when i let up it goes to 17 then off the chart.i take the air filter off All is good.what the heck is goin on???

My 2 cents is that air cleaners redirect how the air enters the carb. Might be changing the signal on the air bleeds. Seems to be a consensus that those K&N filter lids cause a lot of weird turbulence too.

Mr P-Body touched on this as well as others on what the carb "sees" and air from the sides AND on top seems like it would be goofy.......

Has anyone tried tapeing the side of the air filter closed and just getting the air from the lid alone? Kinda like a velocity stack..........

With the air coming in the side(most of the flow is
there) and the top air crashing into the side air
you hurt the total air flow... I dont like drop air
bases either... too many direction changes for the
air to turn..... you can try taping off the outer
ring but I'm thinking the outer will have more air
flow... try taping off both one at a time... also
I would stack 2 elements for a smoother air flow
