I have always used Spicer solid joints in my cars. But they are apparently not available anymore. I want to change the parts store hollow joints in the 4 speed Barracuda to some quality forged units just for safety's sake.

So steer me towards the joints you have had good success with.

Thanks guys!

Is this a street car... how much power.. what U-joint
are you running now.... I have found that most any
good joint WITHOUT the grease fitting will take a lot
of torque

Mild 360, 4 speed, 3.91s, street tires, 527 rear joint.

My local parts store don't even list a joint with out the grease fitting.

The car may not even need a heavier joint, but I have no faith in the cheap joints and feel that quality joints would be cheap insurance.

on the 527 or is it discontinued ... the 7260 to 7290

The only info I can find for the Spicer 5-527x is that is has been discontinued. And I have not been able to find a superseded number.

I called Advance and gave them all the brands and numbers I had for the 527 and they could not cross them to any Brute Force number.

I have bought most of my U joints from Car Quest and they have always been Spicer's I have used the Brute Force thru Advance with good luck and I also know the local 4X4 guys swear by them, and these guys tear up alot of stuff. some of the manufactures will put the zerk fitting in the cap and these usually have a heavier body (cross) and also have a much smaller grease hole thru them, one of the things that some of the old time racers have told me that if you install the joint where as the torque is toward the zerk fitting as opposed to away from it that a standard joint will take more abuse befor it fails, if that makes sense.

They better not have discontinued the 7260 solid Spicer joints! I've had the same ones in my car for years with no issues. Got conversion 7260/1330 joints for a spare driveshaft as well. (Aftermarket driveshaft end yokes.)

Many times Rockauto will have leftovers and may be a source of a discontinued joint.

Dave I agree Spicer is as good as it gets. You may be able to get them from Driveshafts Unlimited in Arnold, Mo. That's what they use on all their work. Excellent source for steel driveshafts. 3608 Market Place, Arnold, Mo.63010 1-636-296-2841 or 1-800-300-2841. Let us know if you find anything closer. Might want to try Mancini too.

Well, so far no parts store here in town have a heavy duty line of joints that have the adapter joint in their line. I have tried Precision and Brute Force, neither make the 527 style joint.

Mancini has a couple of 527 joints, but I don't know anything about them. And they are $50-$60 plus shipping!

I may have to pay that kind of money, but geez, the forged Spicers were less than $20.

What brand does Dr Diff recommend?

That joint has been on there for a long time. And that is because it is a hollow cast joint. I think it is a re-box. If it is a Spicer, I have never seen one quite like it. Anyway, I can get hollow, cast joints locally for a lot less money. In fact, that is what is in the car now.

The parts stores tell me that those are all hollow, cast joints. I already have that. I was wanting a solid and hopefully forged joint.

does anyone else besides spicer make one? none of the parts houses around here sell spicer. they act stupid when i ask them to cross reference the spicer number to their brands. i dont want to order one from mancini because i wanted to change the center out of my truck this weekend. any info?

Spicer 5-527X "is" discontinued. Neapco(New England Auto Parts Company)part number 2-0527 has a "forged" cross body with grease passages. We have beat on many Neapco 2-0527 over the years. Before non greasable joints became "all the rage", guys thought if it didn't have a zerk fitting, it was junk. The solid body is just a by product of the non greasable design. No need for grease passages as caps have positive seals vs pliable seals made to purge grease during maintenance. If you want a Spicer solid body joint then the best way would be to change either pinion yoke or weld yoke to match the other 7290 yoke. Then you could run Spicer part number 5-811x(solid body 7290). Also, Neapco has a similar offering in their new Gold series, part number 2-1175G. Carry On

That is what I use too. Sold under the brand Brute Force, such as NEAPCO 2-1175BF (note the BF suffix) for the 7290 joint. Even Autozone sells them.
