The engine shop is getting ready to dyno a 440 bound for my 1970 Barracuda but they can't get the starters close enough to the flywheel to engage it. The 440 is a 1975 that was in a motor home and it was rebuilt and ready to break in. However, when the engine guys bolted their dyno scatter shield up to it, we are unable to get a mini-starter or a new starter from Autozone close enough to the block so the teeth get engaged to the flywheel. In fact, if I touch the starter directly to the block the distance still seems too great to engage the flywheel. Unless the starter somehow leans into the block, I can't see how these starters will work. They are telling me that the block may need the 143 tooth flywheel but then I would need a new bell and everything else and I am not even sure those parts will fit into an E-Body. Do you think the engine shop is using an incompatible scattershield or it is possible this 440 block requires a 143 tooth flywheel?

The bell determines the flywheel needed, not the block.

The starter bolts to the bell, if they use the right bell with the flywheel you have it will work, that or they need to get the right flywheel to match their dyno scatter shield.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I agree the bell determines the flywheel. Most scatter shields use either a 130 or 143 flywheel.Lakewood makes a kit to use the 130.Either they need a 130 tooth bell or a 143 flywheel. If your car has a 130 bell it will work with the 130 wheel. If they cant figure that out Id be scared of what they did for machine work.Rocky

X2 what SC said, I ran into that too as alot of shops just dont dyno many Mopars/no familiarity

Thanks all, this is exactly what I needed. I looked up the Lakewood bell spec and found the part number for the adapter needed to run their bell with a 130 tooth flywheel. I will pass that along to the engine guys they need to get this adaptor kit to dyno. I wish they could dyno with my bell since it fits but they have to use their gear and they obviously do not do many Mopars. I am glad they are breaking in the cam and pulling the numbers so we can see how they did on the heads.

You guys are awesome!
