I thinking of getting a set of Edelbrock heads for a motor I am going to rebuild. Looking at the flow numbers on edelbrock's website shows the two being virtually identical. Is there something I am missing about the magnum heads? In Edelbrock form is there really any performance difference; or is the reason people go with magnum heads because they are generally going from a set of poor flowing smog type heads on a typical LA engine.

but..putting a LA head on a magnum engine is the problem...

so if you have a LA engine you can buy either head...but why by the magnum head and use stud mounted rockers..and have to get a different intake..so I would buy the LA head since I got boxesrockers..and 20 intake manifolds..

If you have a magnum engine..try putting the LA version on it...how you going to get oil into the shafts..??...

yeah...some early magnum blocks might of/ could of came with oil hole in the head...but is the cam drilled to feed the oil galleries...or you can take it to the machine shop and have the oil passaged drilled...good luck on what that will cost...

You can drill horizontally in at the rear of the LA head(s) into the bolt boss then down at an angle from the rear pedestal bolt threads to reach that horizontle passage. Then T off of the oil port at the top rear of the block to feed em & a holley jet in the passage to meter the flow.

I dont disagree. I did it on my circle burner for a different reason (eliminating some of the leaks at the cam bearings)

open versus closed chambers?

Putting LA heads on a Magnum is not more difficult than the reverse. Different things need doing, but in terms of labor and cost, not really much different.

They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.
