It's been years but the last time I was at Handles Ice Cream in Howland, the strip was still there but all grown over. My dad use to talk about Don Gartlits racing at Howland.

Several have closed in the Atlanta area. Yellow River Dragstrip- where Houston Platt crashed into the crowd. Now the strip is part of the roadway in a trailer park. Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway- not sure when it closed (early 90s?)- now has a subdivision built where it was. Here's a youtube video of a Camaro smacking the guardrail there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae58TyymvLo www.HotRodder.com has a drag strip section with lots of info on old strips.

Halls raceway in Halls TN was a great track in the early 60s and into the 70s. It was visited by most of the Pros and was considered one of the better tracks in the south by a few guys that raced there.

Most of the tracks we raced at in the 60s and 70s are gone now. It's a shame! But, to be honest, many were accidents waiting to happen, short shut off areas, little safety provisions, etc. But that is how drag racing started in the south.
Some that my feeble memory remembers: Cumberland Raceway-Nashville Old Hickory Raceway-Old Hickory, TN Riverside Raceway-Nashville Super Dragway-Fairview, TN Smithville Dragway-Smithville, TN Buffalo Valley Raceway- Carthage, TN Rockwood Dragway-Rockwood, TN Maryville Dragway-Knoxville, TN Lakeland Dragway-Memphis City Raceway-Jackson, TN Optimist Dragway-Chattanooga Airport Dragway-Columbia, TN Sturgis Dragway-Sturgis, KY Highway 11- Bristol, TN Mountain Dragway-Lynchburg, VA Green Valley Dragway, outside of Gunnerville, AL Courtland Raceway, Courtland, AL Delta Dragway, Greenwood, MS Sunset Dragway, north of Huntsville, AL There was also a track north of Evansville, IN There was also a track in Sedalia, MO I also remember racing at Harvey Crain's track at Hailieh, FL(invitational race)
Those were "barnstorming" tracks---many times we could race four times per week!

40Ford, I didn't realize Tenn. had some many tracks in the past. I have seen where the old Hwy 11 track was in Kingsport.
Let some some old or current photos of closed tracks.

I got to thinking after I posted Highway 11 being in Bristol----that it was closer to Kingsport. But, I guess when you are on a roll---you are on a roll.
In the early 60s to early 70s, there were a bunch of tracks in Tennessee. It wasn't unusual to race 50 times per year. During that time, I was in college---just keep the beer and pizza coming---we could go without sleep for days. Heck, we slept in the car when needed or pile in the back while someone else drove. The first time we ran at Indy, we slept under the trailer for five days---couldn't afford a motel room---spent all our money on the rail. But, racing was so much cheaper then---and the winnings weren't that bad---actually made money for several years.
But then that all changed when I graduated from college---went across the stage to get my diploma---then walked to the end of the stage and got my draft notice---I was gone one week later! But the car still ran while I was with "uncle". Picked up three year later. Finally got out of drag racing in 1973.
Still have fond memories of that period!

In 1959 Minnesota Dragways opened and was a track way ahead of it's time. Concrete launch pad and paved pit roads and parking spots. Across the way 10 or so miles was Twin City Drag Strip which opened around 1949. Later to be known as North Star drag strip. Both shut down in the mid to late 70's

The "Chizzler" Greeks car ran 200 a few times at Minn dragway long before Garlets did in 64. I hear there were timing lights at Minn Dragway way before NHRA had them at Indy in 63.

The Doc & Tom Hoover. Two local top fuel cars in 1967 at Minn Dragway. In 1970 Hoover and Doc moved to Funny cars, both ran Dodges.

The "Chizzler" Greek in the paved pit area at Minnesota Dragways. I think 1960. My Dad would go watch him race Don Garlits on a saturday here. Then drive all night to watch them race at Union Grove, Wisconsin on sunday. Dad was an owner of a Mobil Service Station from 1957 to 1976, so Mobil would foot the bill on many trips.

How about O.C.I.R. around 1971-1972. Jim Dunns conventional funny car, before the rear engine funny car. Mike Dedrich bought this car from Jim Dunn. Just a little side question. What ever happened to Mike Dedrich?

Diedrich was involved in a pretty good fire in that car (burned up the back half pretty good). Left racing soon thereafter.
On a side note - I sell the DVD Funny Car Summer and they are signed by Jim Dunn - you can see Diedrich getting his license in that car at OCIR.

One of my favorites (although I've never been there ) is the old Lakeland Raceway in Tennessee. You may recall it from the race scene in "Two Lane Blacktop". http://www.lakelandraceway.com/Edit: I was just going thru the Lakeland website as I haven't watched it in a while and noticed that as of 4-'08, it's being cleared off for a subdivision. The strip will be the main road in the developement.

I raced at the old Lakeland Dragway near Memphis. Was there for an IHRA Bracket Finals in late 70's. Also went there for an IHRA points race in 70's. Was there the day Tommy Ivo's Charger funny car matched the Blue Max which crashed that day) Remember Herb McCandless won Super Mod or some class like that with a 70's Cuda also that weekend also. Here's a photo I took that day.

Does anyone have any pictures of the old Howland Drag Strip in Howland Ohio? I have heard stories about it and I have seen the remains but I have never seen what it looked like when it was running back in the 50's and early 60's.
Also does anyone have pictures of the old Skyline drag stip in New Castle Pa?
Good luck with Skyline. I personally know the old manager from there and he doesn't have anything. He doesn't know anyone that does either.
I do have some shots of Dick Landy's '65 there that my Grandpa took. They aren't really the best though, you can't see the starting line/downtrack. They are also on slides.

That would be cool if you can post them... I just would like to see it. Dad grew up in New Castle and he use to go to Skyline all the time. I'm sure he was there when Landy was there.
Thanks

Raven Rock Dragway, located on an airport on RT. 52 just West of Portsmouth, Ohio. I only raced there once. It was a little ahead of my time.

R.I.P 75-80 Dragway Monrovia, Md. 10-30-2005 It was a slow death, Bill Wilcom tried, but had to give up in the end. I spent many nights there bracket racing. My first trip there was in 1970. Track was pretty good, but if you raced there you knew the return road was pretty crappy.

There was a track in Sanford, NC I would go to back in the late 70's early 80's. If I remember correctly in was in the woods. Dont think it could be seen from any road. Went there a bunch as a spectator. Never had a big car count (when I was there)which was too bad. I remember a guy had a brite red 70 road runner that was fast & usually went rounds. Seems like a Duster or two also ran there. That was about all the Mopars I remember as regulars. I think the track closed in the mid 80's. I think the manager/owners name was Vaden Richardson. Some of you old timers probably know him. I heard he also owned another track. Thinking Fayetteville maybe. I had fun there & wish it was still open. I was asking a fellow racer about the place this summer and was told the track was overgrown with trees now. Dont think I took any pic's.

Tucson Dragway - Jan 2002 - looking towards starting line - my truck in approx same place as my RR in 1983.. you can still see the concrete starting line - and some signs of ummm night racing in the desert... not really sure I'd want to make a full pass considering the deterioration of the track.
Back in the day the track was outside of town, now the developers have built right up to the track entry on Poorman Road..

Anybody remember Hyde Park Raceway in Heath Ohio? After going to Pacemakers Dragstrip and Hyde Park Raceway for many years, Dad let me drive his prized Chrysler powered Willys at Hyde Park in the spring of 1968, at the ripe old age of 15. Even though Hyde Park closed in 1968, I still own the Willys as I raced it in 1968.
I remember Hyde Park. I don't believe it closed in '68..I ran there after that,,probably in '69 sometime or later. Hyde Park was my first organized racing event in EARLY '68. I had just bought a '68 Roadrunner in Dec. '67,,Hyde opened early, snow still on ground in areas, I WON! Ran and WON both 'pure stock' and 'stock'! Needless to say, I was HOOKED on drag racin'! Ran there several times after,,,with not so much success.

Also another 'ghost' in my neighborhood. Belpre Dragstrip. I drive by the property where it was until '63-'64 everyday. I have a flyer framed hanging in my shop from there. I can't say exactly when it closed, but I can remember the newest car I saw run there was '63 Chev a friend of mine had and it was near new at the time. I used to go with my uncle, as I wasn't driving until '65 and my Dad thought cars and spending money on them was a total waste and anybody who did was a total idiot. Needless to say, my uncle and I got along real well. I bought a house(30 yrs ago) about 1/2 mile from the old track. I wish I would have bought one on the same road as the old track. They renamed that road "DRAGSTRIP ROAD" several years ago. HOW NEAT would it be to be racer with an address of "DRAGSTRIP ROAD"!

Hudson Drag Strip, Hudson NC. The first place I ever raced back in the '80s, about 86 or so. I had a chance to go by there in about 2002 and the place is all grown over. I took a pic. I'll see if I can find it.
Another long gone strip is Shuffletown near Charlotte NC. Not sure what happened to it. Someone told me it was now a housing development. Anyone have any pics of it now or then?

Thought of another, Winfield, W.Va. All I ever heard it called was 'Winfield'. I ran there in early '70s. It was located not too far from where Kanawha Raceway is now, only closer to Winfield and on opposite side of Rt. 35 if I remember right.

The old Vineland Speedway the drag strip opeaned 1958 closed 1965, there was allso a roundy roun track and a sports car track that was allso used for motor cycle raceing. a lot of good memories from there. Ran C/G then D/mp and C/D at that track.
This was after the track was closed we were there doing a little T&T.

P.I.D., Pittsburgh International Dragway just south of Pittsburgh near Bridgeville, Pa. I think it closed in 1974. We saw 8 top fuel cars in 1968 run there, Garlits, Prudhomme, Kalitta, McEwen, can't remember the rest. I think it was an old airport at one time. I remember hearing a story that the NHRA bought it but never developed it but I'm not sure if thats true or BS. I have some old pictures but they're to poor quality to post. I also have some stuff from Heidelberg Speedway just up the road from PID. Both tracks were owned by a man named Ed Witzberg.

...somewhere in my junk, I still have a Heidleburg jacket , from the PRA 250 run late in the fall for late models. A bunch of us from the Buffalo area would haul down for that show in the early to mid 70's. I think 74 or 75 was the last year. This was before ASA, ARTGO, WISOTA etc, but the BEST short track guys were there, Howe, Trickle, Joy Fair, Ruttman, Don Gregory,Art Clark, Dick Flaig, Eddie Anchor. I think Bobby Allison and Neil Bonnett made is once or twice. I believe is was turned into a shopping mall. The last year we were there, I think there was over 100 cars to qualify for 30 some spots. The heat races were awsome.....
I'm lost in the 60's and DAMN proud of it.

Yep! Had more fun racing there then at atco, They definately had thier favorites there though. I was there when Bo Laws slid that car on its side half way down the track. Quote:

Pleasantville NJ. Roundy round track. Raced on the straight away. They paid $100 to the fastest car every week. Friend of mine Bill Robinson, showed up with his 66 Hemi Coronet running B/MP.. Took their $$$...He was faster than all those Chevies...Even the ones in A/MP...LOL Bill has been a mentor to HemiFred and I since the begining of time. Can't believe nobody has said Suffolk Raceway. Suffolk Va, A long history and some big hitters raced there. Closed in 1991 after the last owners let it run down to nothing. I sure miss that track. Now as it was then part of the local airport.

I know that Minnesota Dragways and Twin City/Northstar have already been mentioned, but I still have fond memories of both those tracks since I grew up between the two back in the haydays.
I felt saddened while working in the housing developement where Minn Dragways use to be. Driving down interstate 35, the tree's that where next to the tower at Northstar are still standing. Seeing those tree's still bring me back fond memories.

I'm sorry, but I beg to differ,,,Hyde was still running in '69.. I raced there. Not trying to upstage you or anything, just trying to keep facts in their chronological order.

Vineland Nj. was these guys stomping grounds..
Budd Corletto,Bill Winterbergins, (John Fox )machine work Steve Kanuika
the text in the story reads like this (best i could tell due to blurry text)
An impressive arrey of chromed exhaust and injector stacks gets off this sharp dragster's buick powerplant. Budd Corleto and Bill Winterbergins decided to join forces on the car-building project. Both agreed the Buick as being the best choice for a powerplant and it took them no time at all to salvage a '63 mill from a local junk yard. Do-it-yourselfers from way back, they get in touch with a local steel tubing supply house and bought up a truck load of chrome-moly ??? stock. After the tubing was bent and welded, ??? and Bill located a chromed tube axle transverse springs, ??? ??? shocks and wire wheels on the front end.
With most of the chassis and suspension work completed, they concnentrated their efforts on the brawny mill. Hillborn injectors, a howards 190 cam, a high rev valve train, boxed rods, johns pistons, and a set of tuned headers broadend the output of the already potent screemer.
Bud's rig holds quite a few 1/4 mile records, with his best time being 169 mph, 8.48 seconds at langhourne. records in the 160 mph nine-second barrier are on par for the 1/4 mile course. but these guys are changing those stats rapidly.
Future plans call for a direct drive stacked Buick mill with a GMC 6-71 supercharger and hillborn four-port injectores?". Philadelphia-based railster trips the 1/8-mile clocks at 127mph in 5.44 seconds. Action photo shows Bud Corleto in the process of making a 150 mph warm-up run at Atco Dragway. Vertex-sparked '63 Buick mill gets a boost from Hilborn injectors, Howard cam and a .060-inch bore job." The wheelbase was 96 inches and the trans was a 38 La Salle {second and third only} The rear was 40 ford narrowed with a 4.11 gear. the engines machine work were done by Steve Kanuika...
funny thing is budd set all the records..but my uncle John was 110lbs lighter and ran one of the rails fastest mph's..If only a week before,,, it would have been a record.. Budd Getting all the records and the credit for being a good driver (deservedly so!) but at the time my Uncle John would rib him cause with budd's Weight over the back tires...it got mUCH better traction... cheapst
365" Iron J heads,,3480lbs best 1.39 60ft on SS springs.10.54,124 mph ...6.67 1/8th et.average 60fts 1.46 w/ small cam &.063 no2 pill tagged & insured [image][/image]

Pocono Drag Lodge, near Long Pond Pa. I was 15 and my Dad took us out to see the new Pocono International Raceway. Couldn't get in to see it so I talked him into taking us to PDL which was close by. That trip is what got me started in Racing. I made a few trips out there before joining the Air Force. Little did I know that it would no longer exist when I returned home. I got stationed at Edwards in '73 and found Kings Raceway in Palmdale(Later to become LACR) and made it my home track for almost 30 years. And now like many others,it too is gone.
I never heard of Pocono Drag Lodge until this past weekend. The place was closed in 1972. I was only born in 69, so I guess that explains why I never heard of it. Anyway... They started a reunion show in 2009 and they are doing it again in 2010 and I'm planning to go because it looks cool! Lots of old drag cars. Google it, or search You Tube. Lots of neat stuff!
I stole this picture from Google.

This track was closing about the time I was born but maybe some of you may have raced or spectated as a youngster there. Golden triangle dragstrip in between Nederland and Beaumont Texas. That's were Don Garlits caught on fire the second time. all I can find is an old video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1tqj-IV5do&feature=relatedI learned to drive an old standard pickup in the late 70s and there were still some signs up but I would imagine it's all gone now, nothing but a cow pasture today.
