The back of the alternator hits the cylinder head when I try to rotate it into position. I am using the stock '69 brackets which line up with the stock water pump pulley. Anyone ever run into this and if so what was the solution? This is a AC car. Would a non AC alternator be smaller in the back?

I just bought one of those generic chrome swing arms from Advance auto parts for the lower adjustment, and got a longer belt.

I think an alternator like this would have more clearance on the back:

http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/oem50amprbae.html

Can I get a "round back" from a local parts store or are they just going to give me another "square back" type alternator?

Scamp 408, you run the early style water pump, what does the back of your alternator look like?

I haven't checked parts houses in a few years, the round back use to be avalible, Mancini lists the round back as the same from 64-74 when there are actually two styles a single wire (69 & earlier)that uses a pulsed 12v signal to control the output & a two wire (70 & later) that uses a 12v input then a pulsed ground...

i just got a round back alt for my cuda from oreillys. the thing is, ts hit or miss. they may sell them both under the same part number.

Have them send in 3 and take a look at what you get or if you are buddies with the parts guy, maybe he can put in a request at the warehouseto send a roundd back and they can hand pick it for you

This thread has some good pictures of round back and square back alternators:

I definitely think a round back type would solve my problem. I'd like to buy one locally if possible.

Their are 2 diff square back .1 you can mill down to fit the other you cant. The 1 in the pic from other post will work if you mill it.It has to do with the round part by the square. If you still need I will get pics tommorrow.

If you look up the PowerMasters alternator on Summits web site you can down load the instructions and this is what they say:

"Note that the Powermaster alternator is a double field unit that will work with both double field
and single field type external regulators. If your vehicle has two small field wires, they should
be connected to the FLD terminals on the back of the alternator. These wires are interchangeable, so either wire can be connected
to either FLD terminal. If your vehicle has one small field wire, connect it to either FLD terminal on the alternator. Then, using
a short 16 AWG or larger jumper wire, ground the remaining FLD terminal. Some models have a ground stud on the back
alternator case; this or any other bare metal grounding point will be sufficient."

The 60 amp Denso alternator fit the Eddy heads just fine. Mancini Racing sells the complete kit to convert over to the slightly smaller Denso setup.

Thanks for posting pics. A friend of mine knows a retired alternator rebuilder who is going to put together a single groove round back alternator for me. That should fit with room to spare.

I have also heard that some square backs don't stick out as much as others.
