Another thing to think about... when you are traveling
down the road in a rain... which way do the rain drops
go... if up then its not gonna put air into the back
of the cowl... the cowl itself is blocking the upward
flow if its close enough to give the low pressure
area needed at the back of it... so between the low
pressure created from the intake/pistons and the
cowl close enough it should get good flow.... I was
gonna do a test on my car(P-Body) and a guy that was
running a cowl.. we both had similar speeds but he
blew up the engine and I never got the chance

My car hates the cowl hood

I run a 5inch glasstek similar to Johns.I have tried 3 to 4 air pans, blocking this and that and different carb spacers and it dirty's the plugs after one run.

I also run a max effort carb that's 2.20 bore that's made for the most air you can throw at it.

Chris how does Butch Kemp run so quick with a cowl hood on the Mustang and its sealed to the hood

You need to look at the distance from the windshield..
close(about 1" to max 2")... this is mine but its
no A-body... I set this up up so I could hinge it
but I am thinking about making a slider on the back
opening to get it close for racing

my car hates it also.....glasstek 6"trimmed to 1.5" off windsheild as per instruction.factory 6pak hood worth solid tenth to 2 over the cowl.tried it with no hood also and went faster by about the same as 6pak through an aircleaner though in a dart.

Does pro stock allow cowl hood scoops? If they do, why doesn't everyone run one?

Personally, I am convinced there is no substitution for clean/cool air.

Pro Sock says it HAS to be front facing
EDIT
I agree with you...I like my scoop facing forward
and up in the clean air stream

Carbs are pretty much center of scoop and the front carb is about 3 inches from scoop, rear carb a little more clearance. There is about an inch and half clearance to windshield and carbs are not sealed to hood.

I had a smaller cowl hood with a single carb and sealed it to hood and didn't make a bit of difference, now with the tunnel ram and two 4's i didn't mess with trying to seal the carbs on this hood.

FWIW...I used to run a six pack hood on my cuda. It ran about a tenth quicker and 1 mph faster sealed than it did unsealed.

I switched to a 5" cowl hood, unsealed, and it ran the same as the sealed six pack hood.
This was on a combo that I'd run for years.

I have experimented w/ sealing the cowl hood to the carb but haven't seen anything really.

Can you run air cleaners with that scoop? i mean is there enough room for them? i am building a 73 duster and am going to have to find a 7-8 inch tall hood scoop for my car.I am also running a tunnel-ram on RB 440. could you post a pic of the scoop from the drivers seat? if not no big deal/ thanks mopar65

If you go down to the US Nationals and look at all the hemi cars, not one of them that I saw had there hoods sealed to the carbs.

Ok so that means you or the SS/AH make better power without a sealed hood or they just work better that way.
