So....you truck mechanics....what should it cost to replace the waterpump on a 2008 cummins? And do they typically go out at 90K?

If you're paying a shop to do it I would think no more than $300. Mitchell shows labor time at 1.5 hours. $90 water pump, $30 in Antifreeze, plus shop supplies and taxes.

Water pump failure is common on late model Cummins. The pump on my 2008 went out at 48,000 miles.

Easiest water pump change I've ever done, took less than an hour. Remove the drive belt and 2 bolts and it's off.

Changing the pump is easy but the pumps are not cheap, like $300 just for the pump.

I dont know where you are finding the $300.00 water pumps but if that is truely what you are paying I will sell them to you for $200.00 so you save a hundred.. NAPA, Oreillys, and Autozone all have them for $90.00.

Dodge dealers list price for a new one. I could be wrong but I thought they were about that last time I checked.

Mine went out at 88k. Very easy to swap it out. Now the drive belt is another story...

If you have a truck shop / cummins dealer near you, go there. It's the same pump as the dealer except much cheaper. easy to do, take longer to bled the system, get it up to temperature for the thermostat to open. Takes alot of coolant.

agreed.... I value my Cummins engine much more than to put an aftermarket rebuilt junk water pump on my motor so its either Mopar/Cummins (both the same) or nothing. ESPECIALLY thermostats..... I only use Cummins brand thermostats.

I work for a dealership and cannot tell you how many customers have tried to take the cheap way out and buy an aftermarket pump & or thermostat only to come to us and buy an OEM once their aftermarket junk has left them with a tow bill......

The original water pump on my truck failed after 4 years and 48000 miles. How can an aftermarket part be any worse than that?

While there have been OEM pump failures....most all the ones I have seen or heard about typically started leaking and very few had the bearing expire. I experienced a leaking water pump on my 03 truck at approximately 60,000 miles but didn't know it was leaking until I turned the engine off. It barely leaked while running so that allowed me to keep going until I got home to change it. The bearing was fine....it was just the internal seal.

Cummins parts, as with most OEM parts that are made for the auto manufacturer's....have to hold a much tighter tolerance in the manufacturing process of the parts than do the "stock" aftermarket parts manufacturer's. I was in the manufacturing industry for a better part of 25 years and if you were to see what I have seen over the years...you would most likely never even consider a "stock" aftermarket part that the engine rely's on to function properly......
