OK is there any reasoning to which cars got what? I know the lower performance cars usually received an 8 1/4 but I have seen 73 -74 400 / 440 cars with 8 3/4 and 9 1/4 Any logic to what got what or just what the plant had on hand?
There comes a time in life, when you walk away from all the drama & people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh, forget the bad, and focus on the good.

The HP and some other big cars were supposed to get the 8-3/4 through the early part of 74. The later part of 74 they dropped the 8-3/4 for the 9-1/4.
The light duty B bodies were supposed to get the 8-1/4.
You sir, are CORRECT! The 8 3/4 went away in 74 (at some point) and the 9 1/4" replaced it. I have the 73/4 parts manual around here somewhere...If I can find the changeover date, I'll post it back.
This is also true of Dodge trucks.
I am, however, curious as to what rear a late build 74 360 4spd Cuda/Challenger would have had.... I've never seen a 9 1/4" E-body rear.

How did you come up with all that NOS drivetrain stuff?
I have an NOS C-body 9.25" (Dana 53) housing.
Chrysler had assembly plants and dealers here , and some of them still have Old Stock.
actually they are still here, after a break for 13 years Chrysler left Venezuela ( 79-92 )
I got this housing with SG carrier thinking on upgrade my 8 3/4 because perches width is the same, just drum to drum width is a little bit shorter, about 1/2", but never found the axles or cover. Berings needs to be replaced since got some water on storaging and they are rusted.
as far I rememeber, gear ratio is 2.91 or so

I've heard of some 74 B's with a 9.25 but just have never seen one myself. Had a couple 74 HP Chargers and both had 8.75 but may have been early cars. Have had a few 74 trucks all with 8.75 rears. Maybe they just used the 8.75 for the E's through out 74. All 71/4B's 2-bbl cars both BB and SB and 6 cyl that I've owned had 8.25

I've a 73 Sat 400 Wagon with trailer pkge and 9.75 open.
I assume RK, WK, some wags, and tow packs would all be likely prospects.

I have a 9.25" in a 71 RR, came with the car when I got. I know its not factory...I THINK it came from a 75 Monaco dunno for certain. The fit is perfect though. I pulled a rear sway bar out of a 75 B-car many years back, with ISO leaf plates, 9.25 rear also. I didn't know the 9.25" was referred to as a Dana 53, however, I DID know the carrier's were Spicer units (hard miss the DIAMOND stamp). Thanks Dr. Diff for that little tid-bit.
Death or Glory...it's just another story.

I've got a 9.25 w/3.55's in mine, no idea if it's stock or not though. Anybody know why they switched from the dana to the 9.25? Cheaper I assume?
There's a chance yours is a legit 74 B-body 9 1/4. As far as I know, they were available with either 3.21 or 3.55 Sure-grip rears. I don't think the 74's B-body 9-1/4" were produced with an open diff. :shruggy? They are not overly common...in ALL the 71-4 B-bodies I've seen in the last 21 years of messing with specifically these cars....I've seen 2 9-1/4" rear cars.
The Dana 60 was no longer used in passenger cars after 1972. I'm guessing the 9-1/4" rear is cheaper to produce than the 8-3/4", hence it's eventual replacement.
