Ya close I rather have the 340 for the smaller main size and larger bore, plus I think you can go as big a 444 ci in a 340. Aftermarket heads would be best but a X with some 2.05 intake valves and good porting will work good. All depends on how much $$$ you got and how fast you want to go.
I went with a 360 because the blocks are cheaper and more readily available, and I could get the roller motor and magnum heads for all of the advantages that they offer over the LA/flat tappet stuff. Magnum heads are touted as being good up to about 450hp without much work, and I wont ever have to worry about wiping a cam lobe, which makes me not worry about break-in as much. Just gotta make sure the rings seat. So I thought that all around, a 408 magnum based stroker with mag heads gave me the best bang for the buck. And an added bonus for me is keeping the serpentine setup, the better alternator, and elec fuel pump to help with the hard starts so many of our cars seem to deal with because of todays gas.

What Roe said, the 360 blocks are cheaper & you're only giving up a few cubes. Put your dough in the heads, not sure of a recomendation on that but Hughes' ported EQ magnums or one of the W's or Edelbrocks are options

Also, forgot to mention, my motor is being built by a member on this board. Wont be able to report back on how I like the motor until early spring when it gets installed.

For a stroker I'd recommend the 360 for the taller deck height. Rod/stroke ratio will be much better as well as cylinder wall side loading.
