I shoot some doors and fenders and do a little blending with base/clear. I have a cheap Harbor Freight HVLP that does a fair job on small pieces like jambs and such. But larger areas takes forever because a wider spray pattern leaves dry streaks at the pattern's edges.
A better gun will help here won't it? What gun would you recommend? Especially considering price. Best bang for the buck kind of thing.
Thanks!

If the pattern is to wide you should be able to adjust it narrower. The painter at my shop does all his cars with a gun that he got in a set of 3 for $80. A expensive gun doesnt make a good painter, LOL

Thank you for your observations, but I was hoping experienced painters might respond. The post reflects the fact that I know how to adjust the gun or did the correct spelling and punctuation throw you off? LOL

Spray a piece of cardboard untill the patteren is where you want it.If its a gravity feed it the knob on the side of the gun,and if its a regular gun with the cup on the bottom its the top knob that faces you.I know there has to be an adjustment on it.I use harbor freight guns all the time and they usually spray great.

I am a 2 time loser then
What i read between the lines was he has as a novice reached the limits of what his gun can do!
And he wants a better gun to make up for his skills so he can do better work.

I know my sharppe planum gun shoots better than my HF purple gun. but i use the purple cheapo for shooting laqure on my cabnets and primer on car stuff to keep the better gun cleaner for paint.

Hey Adam, ever heard of an apostrophe? Anyway, once again, you miss the point. I was just looking for someone who can fundamentably spell and spray. Either way, it's not you.

Best bang for the buck is the Divilbiss finishline with the three tips. http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/c-916-devilbiss-paint-guns.aspx

Under cheap guns they sell Astro I want to get the lvlp http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/pc-11608-560-astro-lvlp-gravity-feed-spray-gun-evo4014.aspx Ive heard good things about it. I use a divilbiss hvlp for primers and base coats and a Div plus for clear. Some of the Div gun kits come with 3 tips so you can really do a lot with the one gun.

PS shop around Ive seen them cheaper than the links I sent.

I am not a body guy but did take a course at the local trade school and got to try real expensive guns and low end guns. For me I couldn't tell the difference. When it got time for me to replace my real cheap suction gun I purchased a DeVilbis Finish Line kit from Eastwoods. It came with a jam gun and a full size gun with several different tips sizes. I am very happy with the results I have been able to get with it.

Another vote here for Devilbiss not cheap but not bank breaking either and the extra tips to boot, great deal.

If the pattern is to wide you should be able to adjust it narrower. The painter at my shop does all his cars with a gun that he got in a set of 3 for $80. A expensive gun doesnt make a good painter, LOL

While I kind of agree thats not always true. Some guns atomize the paint alot better than others and you get a better overall finish and less chance of unwanted blemishes in your paint (i.e. dry spots, tiger stripes, polka dots....). Of course a lot of this depends on the paint to, things like color, metallic vs. nonmetallic and yadda yadda yadda...all play a role.

Having been a pro painter, and also being fairly well versed in grammar, I agree with the above advice. For the most part. But a better quality gun does make a difference, why do you think painters willingly pay $400+ for a SATA spray gun? Get the best gun you can afford, the tolerances are better, and they do produce better results. I have always used Devilbis and Sharpe, both companies make decent models in the $200 price range. Just my well spoken .......

I have used most of the guns talked about in this discussion. In my opinion most any gun can be used and get a good paint job. You just have to adjust your gun properly, and have your paint mixed properly. Then you have to be good at laying it on evenly, this is what seperates the wannabe,s from the real painters. And yes i am a proffesional painter, not so good at grammer class though.lol P.S. If you have money to burn get the sata there nice, but you might want to get two, one for base and one for clear.

Who'd shoot $300+/gallon paint with a $30 HF gun??? They shoot primer and surfacer as good as some $200 guns I've used. Which happens to be what the last thread asked about on the CHEAP! Keep it in context.

That Astro Evo gun posted above is a good piece.

Exactly. If you are going to spend the money on good paint, you should be willing to pay for a better gun which INSURES a better job. I have owned cheap guns, and yes, some shoot well, some were borderline, and some I wouldn't undercoat with.............I guess some people are luckier than I am. If you bought a good cheap gun and it works, clean the crap of it so it stays working, and consider yourself very lucky. Think of them as any tools, you do get what you pay for..........me, I am eying another Sharpe for my Spring Roadrunner paint job............
