I have read up on this due to the drone in my exhaust, it's a TTI 2 1/2" with drops from the manifolds and dynomax mufflers. I have the dreaded drone at 40 to 50 MPH and am going to install Cherry bomb mufflers in the tailpipes to stop it. The question is which way to install the mufflers to keep a good sound and also stop the drone, the louvers in the normal way or will pointing them out work.

Maybe try some reproduction Hemi resonators? Never heard about using Cherry Bombs.

I'd go with headers instead, TTI headers. It will sound better, run better and best of all NO drone!

I always use bullets (glass packs) in the tail pipes to control the drone. Never used any brand name bullet, just the cheapest I can find. And I have never paid any attention as to direction.

They do a good job of controlling the drone.

Master, again and still

I've used em (not cherry bombs but glasspacks in general) & they do work. Pick glasspacks that do not neck down at the end nipples & have the open ends of the louvers forward to catch some of the sound waves.

The Cherry Bombs I had on my GM p/u were so loud, I took them off after one day and cut them apart, just because. Mine were not louvered, but punched, so I would suspect they were uni-directional.

I have 440 with 2.5" exhaust and 2 chamber flowmasters. sounded fine with headers but when I put HP manifolds on it it droned and wanted to remove my fillings. I used summit brand bullet mufflers just before my exhaust tips to stop the drone. worked perfectly.

I had the exact same problem with the same exhaust system on my 69 GTX. I installed two Summit JEX-A4512B glass packs just ahead of the tips. There are two ways to put them in, I selected the low back-pressure mode, no drone at all now.

not to steal the thread, but...did the glasspacks do anything to quiet the exhaust?

I put Summit 12" glass packs in my tail pipes, no drone. I have 3" to the tail pipes and then
2 1/2" with 1 7/8" W2 headers. Love the sound

Had same problem and went with the magnaflo resonators just before the tips little more money than the glass packs.

Thanks for all the info, I have the cherry bombs and the louvers are pushed up in one direction only so if you mount them as in my earlier picture they will catch the exhaust and quiet it down some. They can be mounted backwards so the exhaust will bounce off of each louver in a crisscross pattern, I was thinking about mounting them that way so I wouldn't lose to much sound but don't know if that will break up the drone. The system sounds real nice at idle and up till it's starts the resonance drone then again after it passes that point.

Since these will be welded to the pipes I may tack them on the test run the car to see which works better but will have to wait till the snow stops falling for that to happen.

Thanks againg

As a sole sound dampner, I would expect that. As a resonator used in conjuction with a regular muffler, much less so.

Snce you already have mufflers, I'd instll them in the higher flow direction. They are providing additional dampening, not the only dampening.
