This just came up in another thread, does your block have large T's on the side? Apparently some do & some do not, so let's see if we can figure out why.

Please post a photo showing your casting date, both sides of your block & the engine serial number (not to be confused with the VIN number) with the engines final assembly date on the front of the block if you can also.

If you have a 'leftover' TA block used in the 1971 model year or one of the 355 cid 340 TA race blocks sold over the counter in later years, please join in also.

Thanks to Chet for the use of his photos showing the large "T".

Passenger side first;

355 CID race block (sold over the counter, not an assembly line block)

No T on this one;

Front where the 'normal' serial number would be on a production block, note the 355;

(same block as I posted above, Cody slipped a post in between)

I did not get a casting date on this one though.

The original block in my former T/A had the "T";

4 (3, 6 or 8) 70 on the casting date, it was dirty when I took the photo of the other side.

This is starting to look like a date thing. Later T/A blocks have a "T" and early blocks do not? Too early to tell, but that's one theory. We need a lot more info.

If you have T/A block take a look and lets get more blocks documented.

Then the question becomes why? They already had the T/A in the part number, but was that to small to recognize quickly and easily? Did they simply add a BIG letter "T" so workers could identify the T/A blocks more easily?

It may not be just TA blocks?

Anyone have a non TA 340 with the 'T'?

I just checked a 1971 340 and it does not have the "T". I will check the other 340's in the morning.

So far 0 out of 4 of the 340's that I have do not have the "T". Checked a 1968 340 and it does not have the "T" either. I'll check my 5th and last 340 (1971) in the morning.

It's not clear in this photo but there's no "T" in the casting on my car. (Formerly Troy's)

From Hemicar1971 posting on a different thread...

From the video, 11/26/69 and no "T". The January casting doesn't pan out wide enough to be sure however it also doesn't appear to have the "T".

Also notice the smaller font "S" that is stamped ahead of the "P" in the assembly stamping.

*I have 3 original production line 340's, all 1970 casting dates, 2 more 340 warranty replacement blocks, one cast dated in 70, and one in 73, none have the "T".
