I need to repair a few broken off molding tabs on a 70 cuda grille. These are cleanly broken off, they are too small or delicate to plastic weld back on.
I remember that someone posted here, that there is a solvent for ABS that can be used to join pieces that fit toghether well. It basically patially dissolved the plastic and fused it toghether.
Anyone remembers what its called and where to buy it?

It's called MEK (Acetone works to). Mix up some in a glass jar with some shavings of ABS (old grille pieces work well) and let it sit overnight (it will melt into goo) you want to end up with a mix that's something roughly the consistancy of wet peanut butter. Prep the edges of both pieces of the part by sanding them to a beveled edge, point the edges together aligning them and use clear packing tape to secure them and keep them aligned from the underside. Smear a nice pile of the goo into the new joint on the top side until it's piled high like a weld in metal. Let it dry a couple days, sand smooth. For thicker parts do the same process on both sides repeating the process the same way.

Use the grille pieces melted in mek. It's the best fix out there. Make sure the pieces are clean and have no paint on them. Make it like described-peanut butter like. It may take a day or so to melt the plastic and get the mek to flash off enough for the right consistency. It takes about a full week to flash off all the solvent so be patient!!!! I just restored a 1970 Charger R/T grille that had holes on from foglamps and broken pieces. It came out very nice...I will look for the pics...but in the meantime check it out your view of the beast under construction

What do you mean by the flash off all the solvent. Is there a mixing ratio of MEK to ABS? Whould things happen faster if you ground the ABS up?

BTW, I spy a Willwood box in the picture Tom. Anything interesting with that build?

The flash off = The MEK/Acetone will evaporate from the melted plastic. Time varies with the initial mixture, temperature, and other environmental variables.

Bottom line, one day, 3 days, a week, you'll know when it's ready to sand when the plastic returns to a hardened state, if it's not fully cured it can gum up while being sanded.

When you break down ABS this way it does change it's chemical composition somewhat, it will lose some of it's "stiff" properties and stay just a tad to the flexible side (a good thing when fixing cracked/stressed areas) so don't expect it to return to a rock hard state, just close to it.

Also keep in mind that the glueing or welding portion of a plastic repair job is the easy part, the real, skill, time, and effort falls into the sculpting, sanding, priming, painting, etc. Just like body work in miniature. Practice, practice, practice..

I'm in the process of doing my 68 charger grill and It was recommended to me to use 3m 8115 panel bonding adhesive. I did my first pieces today and while not fully cured yet, it holds like a rock. I replaced the fins and they are so fragile. I can't believe how good they are glued in there.

Fair warning to those using glues, powdered plastics, and other bonding agents (other than the ABS method I described). While using one of the above mentioned products may sound like the easy way to go, and will usually work to glue two parts together, most of it sands differently than the surrounding ABS material (softer/harder). This can lead to allot of fun getting an area sanded flat and level, especially in transitional areas.

You can do lots of tricks with the goo...if you are in a hurry to have it ready you can grind it up but why work so hard???

As to the Charger... well...it's like my AAR as far as tires/suspension up, 440/4bbl iron head auto car. TTI, Firm Feel, RMS etc... 355 dana, 4w disc, corbeu seats, 5 pt seatbelts, etc etc etc. The 440 was built by some one who build nascar engines for one of the big dogs. Welded and gusseted K frame, frame ties, Front rear spring boxes & more, Blacked out front rear incl hood...beastly

MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) works good. Stinks though-good way to clean sinuses Have it at work. Good info from Scott

Fair warning, MEK is VERY BAD for you, don't breath it or get it on your skin, not unless you are interested in getting some nasty cancers.

Good pt.
Acetone is not as nasty as mek but you still need to use adequate ventilation, nitrile gloves, safety glasses, long sleeves, no shorts and a respirator if you do not have adequate ventilation.
