find a broken engine... hmmm....

but seriously, i have a lifter on the left bank that sometimes ticks, sometimes doesn't. when i fire the engine up cold it almost knocks for a few seconds. so it seems that it is pumping up, but not staying there.

how do i isolate which one(s) it is?

Pull the valve cover off and move each rocker arm by hand..see which one is more loose/has more play then the others ?
(that is what I've done on some ticky Hemi-6's I've had which are hard on lifters..)

If that doesn't work, try this. It gets a bit messy and you want to have a hose or extinguisher near.
Warn the engine so it will idle low and smooth. Start the car with the valve cover off. Grab a wooden handled hammer and press the handle end against the top of rocker on the pushrod end and lean on it. It should collapse the lifter some (tick, tick). Release the hammer, and the lifter will pump up. The bad one will take longer.

too bad it's a hemi and the valve covers are $$$ or you could just cut the top off one to keep the mess to a minimum

I've got a few spare Hemi valve covers around..

They are just abit too long and too narrow though

I had some bad lifters in my 383. we pulled the valve covers off, started the engine for a minute. as soon as we shut the engine off the bad lifters bled off instantly. didn't even have to touch them.

how many miles are on the engine? usually a lifter bleeds off because of a smal piece of guck in it. Try running a qt of ATF or Rislone with your next oil change. That will clean the varnish and guck out.

I am truckless..

I have a tool so you can change out the lifter without removing the intake. Mike

Use a stethascope to pinpoint which one.A long piece of hose will get you close.

well, no plans to pull it apart just yet. the cam and lifters, springs and all are new, only a few thousand miles.

so if i can just figure out which one it is and replace it, that would be the ticket!

not exactly what you want
both this video is worth a look:

does anyone have one of the old hydraulic lifter test stands that Chrysler, Ford or GM used to have in the specialized tool catalogs?

I ask to be able to have a
Brand name or official part number for eBay searches

did you know that a
Rhoads style hyd lifter
has a flat machined on purpose to the internal piston outside diameter to cause it to leak down quicker, but in a repeatable way?

if you have trouble seeing the USPTO drawings
which are TIFF files
download and use the
free Apple Safari for Windows
browser program which has good tiff support built right in
