In talking with some informed engine builders the 383 block is as strong as the 400. The 383 smaller bore size does affect airflow compared with the larger bore size of the 400. I do like the idea of using the 383 as they are more plentiful than the 400. I am looking at putting together a 455, 496 383 based stroker for my next build just to try something different.
I am very interested in this as I have a good 383 that has been turned into a 431. I was always told the 400 was the be all end all for stock blocks due to extra beef in the mains area.
How does the 383 compare for strength? Not trying to be smart I just am very curious.
Thanks!

Bill...are you thinking of getting rid of the smallblock you run now?
Hope not...would REALLY like to see you merely put a good set of heads on what you currently have, like the 230 Indy heads. At your weight with your 904 car would likely be even quicker than what your stated goals are.
No Don I have no intention's of getting rid of the 408, may have some different plans for it later or just keep it for a rainy day, I also have a 69-30over 340 block that I have been stareing at alot here lately, I plan on some day to build up a nice street toy just to cruise in and that will be smallblock power

In my opinion the "extra beef" in the main webbing of the 400 compared to the 383 is equivalent to the "extra beef" of the late 70s 440s compared to the earlier 440s.
Now I need to pin those needles, got to feel that heat Hear my motor screamin while I'm tearin up the street

i vote long rod 438. a little easier to build in some serious compression, light pistons, and a really good rod ratio. that's what mine is gonna be. it would still be a rev monster.
for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

Bill.. the only 383 based engine I built was a destroked 383.. high reving in my 69 Valiant (that was a 9000-10000 rpm engine) with a rock crusher trans
What's that sound like? I had a nice stock stroke 383 i ran to 7k from time to time but 9-10k....

I think the clue here is "rock crusher trans". The 9-10k rpm was likely due to missed shifts.
