so driving my 07 the other day and I smell fuel. couple miles from home so I drive it. get home and #4 injector line is cracked up near the injector. (and spraying fuel at 20,000psi) as we know this is a common problem on the common rail trucks. its has something to do with the line hold downs and lack of support on the injector line.

so, do yourself a favor.
1- check all your 8mm bolts that hold your injector lines in place (the part with the blue plastic blocks) tighten them. this should quiet down a noisy lifter tick kind of sound if you have one. it did on my truck

2- order a spare #4 line. its a 10 minute job on the side of the road if you have to change it. 19mm (or 3/4) wrench. 8mm wrench and a 10mm wrench. (ratchet makes the job easier in the 10mm bolt) common rail doesn't need to be bled so bolt it on and go.

3- do not buy from maMopar unless you like to pay too much. deal with your local Heavy Duty shop who deals with cummins. $30-40

cummins upgraded the lines with pt# 4988808 this is a upgraded design with a torx screw. this is what I had in my truck and it failed. new design is cummins pt# 5289447 this one has a rubber isolator that gets rid of the plastic hold down design

thought I would pass on the info because if it hasn't happened to you it will very soon

new design

Nice to know Chris....I just bought an 07 5.9 ....pretty noisy enginewise....I'm gonna check those hold downs. I've calmed some of the noise down by running outboard 2 stroke oil in the fuel. I'm curious about the hold downs now....

I blew up two 5.9 Cummins, an 04 305 and an 05 325 and both were injector issues with the #4 injector! With the 04 the injector went wide open and hydraulic'd the engine and threw the #4 rod, the 05 had an injector go dead and fry a piston, at least that is what the dealer told me when they replaced the engine, I wonder now.

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.
