I should be painting my engine tomorrow or Sunday and I wanted to know if the bolts that hold the alternator brackets on are engine color, black or natural? How about the power steering bracket bolts. I have studied the pictures I have and have conflicting information.

AAR 340/6 as it came.

Thanks in advance, Kevin

Neither were on the engine when it was painted.

Actually some were. The water pump housing bolts (some held other accessories as well) were painted with the engine, removed, and added back after the accessory brackets were added. This left them in engine color and some chipping on the corners from the process.

You have any original examples/pics to document these bolts being painted? I would love to see them.

There was a couple of Frank Badelson engine detailing articles recently in Muscle Car Review talking about what Scott just posted.

I believe an original paint Dart but it's a 69.

But I have others without, and a lot of repaints both ways. Nothing I was willing to stand on, but I know Scott has studied and documented a lot more originals than I have so may be he can add and put this to bed.

Was it for small blocks? Or did it also include big blocks? Not doubting just looking for documentation for future reference. Thanks

The question was small block but the more info the better, I can look at some of my big blocks later to see what I can see, just building the AAR right now so kinda single minded right now.

I think the article covered big block/hemi detailing only but I can check tonight. I would think the paint and assembly methods would be similar.

FWIW these pics are from a survivor AAR that was at Carlysle 2 years ago. Frank Badelson was there "polishing on the paint". I asked if I could take a few pics inside the rope and he said go ahead, your not gonna find one any more original than this one.

Actually I think that water pump has been off or replaced, notice almost all of the paint missing from the timing cover. Might not be the case but I'd check and verify on that before calling the small bolt details "original".

Painted water pump bolts have been documented before. See:
