I have an 86 Ramcharger, and it still uses the antiquated Amp meter gauge.

I would like to replace the gauge with the factory volt meter, or swap the cluster if the gauges are not removable.

What year volt gauge should I be looking for?

If I swap the cluster, will the speedo cable end be the same as the newer cluster? I know the 93 is an electronic speedo so that one wont work.

The first 1 I saw was in a 90 Cummins truck.

IIRC The speedos are electric not cable driven in those years..

I wonder if I can just swap the gauges, they are in the same location, and same style.

I will have to see if I can find one on eBay or some such

I suspect my Amp gauge is broken. The needle never moves more than a fraction of a fraction...

Recently I my alternator was only putting out 11 volts, and the Amp gauge showed no sign of discharge, with light, and fan motor running. Eventually the truck just died, but luckily I made to the repair shop.

I now have a new alternator, and replaced the voltage regulator just because. Has a new battery, and now things are working, alternator is putting out 13-14 volts at the batt terminal, but that dang gauge still never moves.

Personally I think an Amp gauge can tell the driver much more than the volt meter, but the volt meter doesn't require high amp wiring to be running through the bulkhead, and dash panel.

I am getting a bit of a flicker in my headlights when sitting at idle, more so if I'm using the fan motor. But this goes away when the rpms are brought up a tad bit. IIRC this was an issue on many of the Mopars, had something to do with the alternator doesn't spin quite fast enough at idle to put out a full charge.

I plat to put the headlights, and fan motor on relays, but I'm not sure that will help with the idle flicker, but it will get more power to the lights, and fan with out running high amps through my switches.

Those ammeters in the late eighties trucks etc., were WAY inactive, compared to the old mopars we all know and love, that's all I know.

1990 was first year. the 81-89 used a shunt so they wouldn't burn up easily.


Dinuba, California, Home of the PALOMINO ranch and 440 truck farm, where dodge trucks have a home. Have Four 1979 dodge PALOMINO trucks now.
