this is from andy440.com he is talkin about his dodge, but same for your gtx Which brings us to where to look for the body numbers, to see if our car has been rebodied or not? There are two places to look on the 67-70 cars, one is on the front radiator support. It can be on the top of the support like mine, or on the back side facing the engine. The number you see starts with an "A" which stands for the assembly plant, in this case Lynch Road. The next digit is an "8" which stands for the model year - 1968. Next is a "W" which means Coronet body. The next six digits are the shipping order number, and you can see they match my fendertag. This same number is also stamped on the rear of the car under the weather stripping on the driver's side trunk area, for 1968 and newer. 1967 will be stamped on the rear bumper mounting area of the body. 1969 and newer cars have the last eight digits of the VIN instead of the shipping order number.

i have read that sometimes stamping was missed,,a superbird is an example of some not having the core support stamp.

Hi I assume your ID (68 GTX) is the same is the car you are asking about, I did not see mention of the year/model car you are referencing. If it's a B-Body (GTX) then you are right and it should be there..... If it's an E-Body then that's a different story. If it's that important (only if it's really important)... I would take some lacquer thinner, a rag and maybe some sandpaper and take off the paint and any filler that may be covering it up.... Another hint would be to look for clues as to whether or not a replacement quarter panel was ever installed. That should be pretty easy if you know where to look and what you're looking for. If it's a car that you own and enjoy driving....and you're just curious... I'd just enjoy it and keep driving it ! Good luck

Quote:
This VON # was it just a random # or is in some way tied to the VIN#?
The SO aka VON is actually the first number assigned to a specific vehicle. Typically the number came from the individual order sheet provided at the dealer or sales bank. (Specialty VONs are another topic).
The SO number was administrative in nature and used to track the vehicle through the ordering, invoicing and billing before the VIN was assigned and before assembly. The SO ties to the VIN through documentation like invoices, window stickers, broadcast sheets, IBM inspection cards and other factory documents.
